Is it true that the only way to install a aftermarket cd deck is to change out all the stock speakers?

It can be done without completely replacing everything. The only drawback is that you won't gain much in sound quality by only swapping out the factory deck. The entire factory system is very poor and only replacing part of it won't gain you a whole lot.

an aftermarket head unit sounds great with stock Bose or Monsoon speakers (better with Bose IMO) Of course you'd get better sound from aftermarket speakers; well most of them...

You don't need to take out the speakers themselvs, but you'll need to get in there and remove the amps in each of the front speakers. This way you'll be able to run an aftermarket HU with your stock speakers...
