Exclamation Re: capacitors

WTF do you need 5 farads for? Or are you doing a pure SPL competition setup?

Most 1 farad caps are the same, I believe there are only like 2 MFG's world-wide that make them, all the brands just put their labels onto them.

That much capatance will just be a hindorance to your stereo/charging system; I've only seen 5 farads installed on 1 street driven car that wasn't a pure SPL competition car. And it already had a 240A alternator, and 2 yellow top batteries; it's a 5kW rms sound system.

If you are just getting one because you think you need one, don't. Build your system, select your components, and build your charging system accordingly. Upgrade the alternator and battery first, then add a cap or multiple. Adding caps when they are not needed or too large of caps can and will hurt your charging system.

I believe the there is only 1 MFG for caps that large with a couple companies offering them under their names; none are under $300 AFAIK. Audiobahn, Phoenix Gold are the 2 companies that come to mind right away.

I'm running a 2kW rms system with 1 yellow top, and a 200A alternator, with 2 1 Farad caps with ZERO issues. But I added the caps after upgrading everything else and having some slight dimming issues that I didn't like.

Unless you are running some SERIOUS audiophile equipment with some INSANE power you aren't going to need anywhere's near 5 Farads of capacitance.

Re: capacitors

i was going by what some shops had suggested. i was looking at either doing 2 12" jlw6's or 2 12" treo's. this is to go along with my 2 sets of mb quart premium's.

Re: capacitors

Well, first off what amp (s) are you using to power them?

What size alternator do you have, stock?

Once you tell me this, I can help you adjust what you need accordingly.

I have a 200A alternator in my bird, with 200A worth of stereo equipment draw (Total of all the fuses between the amps) and with the 2 Farads, I ONLY get a slight dimming when I'm sitting at idle at a stop light with my stereo volume over 30 out of 35.

amps i am looking at are here in this forum
http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?t=321282

i am running the stock alternator and have a red top battery already. when they were suggesting equipment they were suggesting 300 amp anl fuses to go along with the set up.

Re: capacitors

I would DEFENETLY upgrade your alternator to at least a 200A. That would be the first step and make the most difference. After that I would go to a Yellow Top then just use a single or pair of 1 Farad Caps just hooked to the subwoofer amp(s) those are going to have the largest draw.

I'm upgrading to a 320A draw system this winter. I'm planning on doing the same thing I just told you have have had sucess with it on another Camaro system that I did.

200A Alternator, Red Top upfront, Yellow Top out back, and 1 or 2 1 Farad caps to each subwoofer amp (each amp pulls 120A).

Re: capacitors

Adire Koda Component up front
Adire Koda Midbass drivers in the sail panels
Adire Brahma 10" (Pair) in custom stealthboxes

Each Koda is getting ~ 100Wrms, each Brahma is getting ~1500Wrms

That's what's in my car...

Re: capacitors

damn those adir brama can handle a nice size load for 10" subs. are you getting your stealth boxes from subthump? also do you have a link to those adire subs? how do they rate in sql to the w6's and treo subs

Re: capacitors

From what I've heard they are better than the W7's, and I've never heard of Treo subs. Adire designed and patened the BL technology that makes their speakers sound amazing, the Brahma and XXX are the only 2 that I know use that technology, there maybe others now.

Nope, speakers like these, the SQL or even the high-powered SPL subs won't fit into a subthump stealthbox. Mine are a combination of 1" MDF, and a LOT of fiberglass resin and cloth/matt. I can stand and jump on them and they don't even bend; I'm 200#.
There's a special frame that I built around the speakers frame and magnet to support it, the driver only weighs 37#s.
