To amp or not to amp?

I picked up some CDT 6.5 midbass for the sail panels and getting the infinity 62.7i for the doors. Hers's my question...I was planning on getting a 5ch amp to push the door and sail speakers and use the 5th ch to power a sub later down the road.Since the 62.7i are two ohm,do I need to amp them? If not,i could just get a 3/4 channel amp. Thanks

I thought the monsoon amp put out 2 ohms?

it's gonna be a matter of opinion.... some will curse the monsoon amp that you have in your car and say run an amp to all of them.

I say try running off of the stock monsoon amp... if you don't like the way they sound... amp it...

Just don't power them from the Delco HU or an aftermarket HU -- you should have great results using the Monsoon amp.

Keep in mind those speakers can handle around 70 W.RMS? I think and the monsoon amp puts out approximately 20-25 W.RMS only per door, so if you want more volume/clarity go with an aftermarket amp.

EDIT: Just be aware that the tweeters in the doors are 4 ohms (mids=>2 ohm)

The amp doesn't put out anything but a signal. It's the speakers that determine the load on the amp. If the speakers are 2ohms then that's the load presented to the amp. If the load is too low for the amp then it will most likely overheat, go into thermal protection mode and shut down.

Well then like I said, just don't power them with the HU - use the Monsoon amp. Power from your HU is probably 20-22 Wrms.....amp puts out maybe 20-26 Wrms to each door, so you aren't losing power - and the factory amp isn't bad at all as far as distortion/etc.

Of course....this is all assuming you have the Monsoon system...do you?

Yeah. I have the monsoon system. So basically the Infinity 62.7i should be ok taking power from the monsoon amp? I really wanted some CDT 6.5,but they are 4ohm and was worried that they may not sound all that great.Eventhough,I could probably modify them the way some guys did the Alpine 6.5 speakers.

That modification has nothing to do with changing impedances or anything - just getting max power possible from the factory amp. Of course those are OK taking power. 4 ohms speakers would even sound better than factory, without volume loss (which would be made up due to better efficiency).

Does that mean that the CDT 6.5 would sound better because of the better sensitivity compared to the crappy stock ones, eventhough they would be at 4 ohm?

Sound better than what? Stock - yes. You aren't cutting the power in half or cutting sound in half or anything just because the impedance is doubling. Any dB change in sound production is made up for in higher quality, more efficient speakers (unless you go with some real crap).

Or, you could just power the 4 ohm speakers off the HU you have, with about the same power.

I understand now. Now,since the monsoon uses 4wires and the CDT would only have two connectors, how would I go about wiring them up? It seems to me that my best bet would be to use the infinity so I can just hook them up and go?

I actually do not know how those Infinity speakers work because I have no experience with them. I do not know if the crossover that they come with is required, or if they can somehow act is coaxial speakers as well. Also, the factory midbass is of 2 ohm impedance, the tweeters 4 ohm impedance.....so I do not know if that particular channel is OK with seeing 2 ohms at the tweeter. (I am waiting for more info from someone who has used these)

If you WERE to get the 4 ohm speakers, you have 3 options:

(1) best option IMO, wire them up to your HU

(2) 2nd best option, less power than first, hook up JUST the 2 woofer component wires from the factory Monsoon.

(3) modify the speakers in order to wire the midbass/mid-freq portion and tweeter portion separately to factory Monsoon.

Just found this thread about the Infinity 62.7i. sounds like it may be my best choice.http://www.ls1.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29204
