Amp Mounting
Amp Mounting
Ok, having had my last amp stolen, when I hook up my new one in a few weeks when I get home, I'm planning on mounting the amp where the spare tire and jack was. Routing the wires is no problem as they're all still there. What I'm wondering is about actually mounting an am in this space. Has anyone ever done this, and what precautions did you take, against any possible vibrations and moisture, and air circulation. I'm thinking of just putting some kind of padding on the underside, which should solve the vibration problem, but what about heat? Any problems with overheating. Did anyone who mounted it this way just use a self tapping screw on the sheet metal, or did you fabricate something? Thanks!
I have a custom amp rack mounted there, (plywood with carpet over it) I have a soundstream Angina mounted there and have had no problems for 2 years.
The amp has shut down due to heat on a couple of occasions but it was very hot out. (100+) I mainly drive it at nite so I have not had many problems with heat.
I am very happy with the stealth install, the head unit is the only thing you can see and the faceplate is removable for those rare times I leave it somewhere unwatched.
I put a JL audio stealthbox in the left rear and it sounds great.

Take a look at my car and see if you can use my design. Click on the link below.
Forget about placing padding under the amp. If you have screws in the sheet metal all the vibrations from the road will transfer to your amp thru the screws. The padding won't do a thing.

I've seen your car before. Outstanding setup. I'm trying to make my install completely hidden save for the head unit and subwoofer (MTX Thunderform). Which is my reasoning for mounting the amp in the right 1/4 panel. I guess I'll just have to fab something out of fiberboard to fit in there. I used to have a cut to fit 1/2" fiberboard piece across the bottom of the "trunk" where the t-top rack would be (I don't have t-tops), and I had the stolen MTX amp just bolted to that. Worked like a charm until some perps decided to run off with it.
How big is your amp? Maybe you can try something like this.

That would work, but no spare tire. The amp is an Alpine MVR100 I believe. It's pretty small. But punchy.
That's why I'm mounting it on the right side. The spare tire and jack are all gone, so I figure that's a good spot to hide it. I'll figure something out.

For a completely stealth install, check out the link in my sig. I also have installation instruction on my site.
I too have my amp mounted in the spare, but I also have one mounted behind it. Your Alpine might fit where my 2nd amp is mounted since you don't have a spare.

Well, I would prefer that it be bolted down, but not a bad idea. I'm thinking of mounting in more or less on the actual wheel well, or the side of the "trunk" where the spare tire would have been. Good ideas though.
BTW, Nice car!!
