Which amp for Focals????
Which amp for Focals????
I have a set of Focal polyglass 165v components that I am about to put in my Trans Am. What would be the ideal amp to power just these components? I have a seperate amp to power my sub.
Thanks
Thanks
Re: Which amp for Focals????
Give us a list of amps to choose from. What kind of budget do you have to work with? What's available to you in your area? How much power are you sending to your sub? Your rather vague question is hard to answer without a little more info to work with.
Re: Which amp for Focals????
I just don't know what type to run. I am going to run a Type R 10 in a stealthbox with an Alpine MRV-T320 powering it. I just need to know which amp to use on the front components. They say that the ideal watts to it is 75w, so does that mean I need a 150 watt amp???
oh, and all stores are around me.
Thanks

Re: Which amp for Focals????
A quality amp that can deliver anywhere from 50Wx2 to 75Wx2 should do the trick nicely. Another Alpine amp would be good if you want it to look like the amp you already have. If that kind of thing is important to you.
Re: Which amp for Focals????
For Focal I would get an amp that puts out at least 100 watts rms. I have found that most high end highs don't live up to their potential with less than their rated power. My Diamond hex's are rated at 150watts rms and I found that anything less than 100 watts on each sounded horrible no matter what brand amp it was. Overpowering sounded far better than underpowering. Had way more headroom and not to mention midbass was faa better.

So you are saying that your Focals don't sound decent unless they are at max volume? Just because your amp CAN put out 100 watts per channel doesn't mean that they are ALWAYS putting out that much power.
Re: Which amp for Focals????
NOt saying max volume. Just saying with an amp that has the potential to overpower the speakers you can give cleaner sound and more headroom before the destortion from turning up the radio kicks in. With a 50-75 wattrms amp I had no midbass and the tweeters were loud. By setting the tweeter to minus three and giving the component set more power the midbass has a chance to shine and really sound good. I hope I explained this right. All I know is everytime I build a system now I tend to go for an amp that is slightly more powerthan the speakers are rated for and tune it in such a way that the highs sound great.
Re: Which amp for Focals????
When purchasing amps, I personally like to get one with a little headroom. I have 165w, and I try to run 125 watts to each channel(the longest I have ran the same setup was around 4 months lol). Remember, you can always turn a gain down with an amp with a little too much power, but turning a gain up with an amp with too little power can clip your signal.
Re: Which amp for Focals????
I ran a PPI 40wx4 to a set of Polykevlar 130ks and a set of Polk 6x9s and it sounded awesome. I was able to crank those Focals till my head hurt and they sounded awesome with only 40w to each set.
