93 Z28 Stock Speaker upgrade w/ no amp

I was wondering what would be a good option if I was looking to replace all the stock speakers with essentually the same size after market? What would be a good brand that fits well? How many speakers total do I have. 2 up front, manual says 2 behind seat are empty but I'm pretty sure they are in there, and I assume 1 sub in the back. What are some options without an amp or box just to get a little better quality sound. One of the back speakers is blown. Any ideas?

Don't tell me I'm the first to upgrade the stock speakers. If that is the case and nobody on this site has any clue about stereo equipment I will post what I find when I do it (speaker sizes, what brand was used, how they fit, how they sound, etc). I guess people on this site are more into racing like myself.

I bought some sony 6 1/2 3 way speakers and installed them in the stock locations. They sound beeter than the stockers and the mounting holes even ligned up perfectly so I didn't have to do any drilling. They sound better now that I installed a new Panasonic deck with 50Wx4. I think i may put a 4 channel amp in but it sounds good for now. I don't like the idea of adding any unnecessary weight to my car. But the answer is yes to your question. My car had two in the doors and two next to the back seats. i didn't have the bose system.

i think that if you have the bose system you can't just directly replace the speakers because they each have their own little special amp. i had to buy a special adapter just to get my head unit to work right with the bose setup.

If you are planning on installing a new head unit, then you can route new wiring from the head units internal amp to all four speakers. This would more than likely have the best results if you are REALLY against running a 10 lbs. amp in your car.

Thanks guys for the advice! I do have the Bose system so it looks like I might have to add a new head unit as well. Not to mention the cd player doesnt work. And I do have a 6 disk alpine. RallyRed, its not the 10 lbs that concerns me, I have had show quality systems before. I have also had my door sheared from mirror to door handle on both sides and the trunk keyhole popped out when it was stolen. I just don't want to put anything somebody might see and want for themselves. If I can find somebody local to install it I could get the equipment cheap. Looks like I will get a new head unit and try to fill the speaker holes with 6 1/2 oversized. Hopefully the head unit pushes enough to get a good sound out of it. Any advice on what brand might mount perfectly and a nice but fairly inexpensive head unit ($300 max)? Thanks again.

You could always do a stealth install. Mount the amps to the rear wall and run a stealth box or two.

Check out the Alpine units they are they way to go if you already have a 6-disc changer. Might as well use it. You can get a pretty nice unit for $300, just go to their site and check out the features.

PM me if you need a good place to buy one, I know a couple.
