2 Subs Or 1 Sub?
2 Subs Or 1 Sub?
I just sold my 2 12s and custom box for my 96Z28. I am going to start all over and need some suggestions. I plan on buying another box and putting it in my T-top area in the hatch. I have a MTX 302 amp 2 channel( 425 rms i think) I need suggestions on what size of sub and how many ( 1 or 2). I want a really hard hitting bass with low distortion when I turn it up with rap music, but something that also sounds good with rock music. any suggestions on box size, speakers etc. would be great do you think my current amp is good enough for 2 12s??
btw. my old setup had 2 MTX 12s 5000s, It wasnt enough. also had a fairly small box, only went halfway down my hatch area.

Re: 2 Subs Or 1 Sub?
I think you'd be happy with a pair of 12" Alpine Type R's in a box like my t-top box. I have a guy with that setup hitting over 147dbs. But if you need more, you could go ported. I would recommend a brahma in on of my 12" fiberglass boxes, but I have feeling it won't be quite enough for you. But judging from you previous equipment, I can tell you that the alpines in an appropriate size box (like mine) will easily outplay your old mtx subs.
Agreed
!
If you are wanting crazy bass, you're gonna need more power. Might look into running multiple 12" Brahmas, W7, JBL GTi, eD A, IDMax. Those are just a few of the big boys, but they are gonna need some power. Two or three of those in a proper enclosure should be loud enough for anyone.
If I wanted crazy bass I'd to this, three eD 12A's in a sealed enclosure with around 2,500-3,500W
. Might wanna run like three RF 750S amplifiers. This is ofcourse if you are wanting to drop serious cash. If not, the Type-R's are a great bargain.

To answer your question about the box, all pricing is posted. You may have to click around to find the right page. Or go here
I'm gonna have to argue for JL on this one...my buddy recently got 2 JL 12w3V2's in his Civic. They play extremely clean with about any music, and they get plenty loud. I had 2 Kicker 12SL5's and his setup is atleast as loud and sounds cleaner than mine did. Both those setups were being powered by a memphis 1000D, so the comparison makes sense. But anyway, I would suggest getting 1 very nice sub like a JL 12w7 or an IDmax 12, and a nice amp to push the full RMS. I have listened to a 12w7 and they are very badass. Just my .02
You sound like you really want some bone crushing bass. Plus, you listen to rap so that says a lot, believe it or not. I'm the same way.
Are you willing to sacrifice your t-top storage? I thought you were, but then Megabass mentioned his t-top box.....hehehehe If you want a ton of bass, check out Mega'a deep well box. Have Mega port it and stick in a pair of Brahmas. Juice with a kilowatt or so and you'll probably knock your head clean off! hehehehe Not quite, but you get the picture. The 12" Brahma is something like $400 shipped. Yeah, a little expensive huh? But you get near 30mm Xmax and some of the best SQ to date for that price. I might even go so far as to say the only equal is the JL W7. (Don't shoot me please!) If that price is doable, you might wanna even look into Adire's newest subwoofer, the Tumult. Almost exactly the same as the Brahma except a little max Xmax (34mm!!!!
) and it works in an even smaller box. But these are 15" subs. They go for $499 shipped. And with either of these woofers, you are going to need a new amp. So all together... we are talking some big figures. If you want something just a tad cheap, go with the Elemental Designs A series. Models up as a great woofer, but I think they are on back order now...? If these are too expensive the Alpine Type-R's are a fantastic buy. You can pick up a pair of 12" for about $200 brand new off ebay. Which is an incredible deal. Port them bad boys and you will EASILY beat out those ol' 5000's!
And I don't think the W3's would have a chance either. Also, check out the Elemental Designs K- series. And I would still recommend getting a larger amp with any of the above mentioned woofers. Let us knwo what you think.

Thanks for all the info
. I think the alpine Rs are more in my price range. Should I go with the 1.1 cu. ft (t-top box) or the 1.5 cu ft box with these subs? also go ported or sealed?? and finally which amp do I need to push these subs.. I thought my MTX 302 amp was supposed to be good??? thanks all for your replys.

Well first you need to figure out your enclosure options. Do you mind losing your T-Top storage area. If you want to keep your T-Top space I would recommend putting I single 10 inch in the drivers side back panel. A good encloser like the one by JL Audio will give you great sound but is not designed for all out retarded bass. If you really wanna slam your self and dont mind giving up the T-Top space I would recommend a pair of Kicker 12 inch L5s in a ported enclosure with a Kicker KX1200.1. We have done a few camaros and firebirds at my shop with this setup and can tell you its the best bang for the buck setup. Plus since it was all installed by an authorized dealer it has a 3 year warranty on the subs and amp. I recommend L5s over L7s for lower power set ups if you wanna run 2 12L7s you will need 2 KX1200.1s And at that point your talking about a new alternator and batteries all for only 3 db louder system. For all out bass nothing beats Kicker it can play loud and still be clean if set up properly, Kicker is good gear that gets its named dragged down by too many peoples ghetto installs. Just to give you a reference point we dropped a Kicker single 8 inch L5 in a ported box with a KX1200.1 and hit 145.1 db(on the dash, no cheater mic), so obviously this stuff can play loud. Now that box sounded a little boomy because of the size but with a smaller enclosure you would loose a little output but pick up alot of sound quality. Oh yea the car also had ZERO sound dampening material besides the factory stuff.
I would use one sub off the amp you already have. Then upgrade to more power as money comes in. I used to run 1 IdMax in a 1.9cuft ported box in the well of my SS. I did a 145.3 in a legal event with it. I too would take the JL over the alpine. We just picked up Treo where I work so I am playing around with those right now. So far I put a SS12 in a prefab 1cuft sealed box off a MMats 500.1 and it slammed pretty good. I think two of those with 1000watts would move you.
