Would a Malibu Coupe Sell?

I was just wondering...I know the Monte's sales are depressed, but thats cause it is bigger, and IMO ugly.

Now the Grand AM coupe has been successful and Toyota and Honda both sell coupe versions of Camry and Accord. I think an AWD Malibu SS coupe with some edgy styling tweaks would do okay. Apeal to the ricers too.

I still see loads of old Berettas around

Only issue is see is it being to close to the Camaro for comfort especially in the eyes of people who know no better.

I don't know why they DON'T make a coupe version. To me, when the Beretta was cancelled after '96, there was a huge gap in the lineup that has never been plugged. 4 door Malibus are not "cool," but a car like a Beretta GTZ/Z26 was nice for its day...

I say bring it

A Camry Coupe would look funny to me (only sedans and wagons here) .

I don't get how such a boring car could sell so well over in the states? For mid to large size cars the Camry is a distant third (maybe 4th with the Mitshi Magna) behind the Commodore and Falcon.

I've thought Chevy should have a Midsize V6 Coupe for years. Chevy needs some cheaper sporty cars to get more young people hooked on Chevy.

Where is the Chevy version or the Eclipes, Tiboron, Celica, Accord Coupe, Stratus coupe, or Couger?

A Malibu coupe would equal a Beretta type car.... Beretta competed with Cavalier Coupe, and Camaro... why bother?

Yes, especially in light of the fact that the alero coupe is done after this year. Also because of the fact that Chevy is GM's biggest brand and for that reason alone they should offer something in this category. Heck the Alero should be considered for rebadging as a Chevy.

Have you seen the Camary Coupe lately?
The Accord Coupe isn't much better.

I think the Cobalt coupe is a great competitor to Eclipse, the soon-to-be-replaced-by-the-Scion TC Toyota Celica, and that group. I also think a revised Monte Carlo would be a decent car to go against the Accord & Camary coupes (hardly classified as exciting cars to begin with).

A Malibu coupe? Unless the coupe market expans again, I don't think it would be that good of an idea. Especially in Malibu's current body style.

The Beretta was a very stylish, sporty FWD coupe.

I don't care how many doors you delete from the Malibu...it'll never be stylish and sporty.

They'll never use the Beretta name again, but I'd love to see a spiritual successor to it from Chevy again.

Not that I am for a new Beretta off the Malibu, but the old Beretta was nothing but a 2-door Corsica. And Corsica was pretty much the definition of "dull".

Slighty lifted headlamps... a different set of taillights... that's about it.

Funny you should say that. I've have seen on more than one occasion Olds Alero's badged with the bowtie. I believe it's a Europe thing... Didn't notice anything else different. Or perhaps Chevy already phased out Olds in sales towards Europe.

The Corsica and Beretta both shared the N-car platform but their exterior sheetmetal were completely different.

The Beretta was certainly not considered dull in it's day. In GTZ form, the Beretta was considered to be a very stylish, agressive road rocket.

The interiors were identical (I had a Beretta as a beater when I had my Corvette... my mom had a Corscica for a long time), the engines were identical... nearly everything was.

Yes, the sheetmetal was different, but it was VERY similar.

My point is saying the Beretta was hot, but basing a new one on Malibu would be bad is rather hypocritcal...

On to the more important thing... most people who bought Berettas, including GTZ's or Z26's (with their cool wheels shared with the Lumina minivan and all ) would consider a Cavalier/Z24... a V6 Camaro... or a Grand Am... which is why there is just no good reason to bring it back.

Not hypocritical at all. The Beretta was considered a hot FWD coupe at the time. Sort of a cross between what the Cobalt and G6 will be.

This is what Jerry Palmer had to say about Beretta:

http://www.beretta.net/history/

In my wildest dreams....I can never imagine anyone comparing a Malibu to a Camaro or Corvette today.

Can you?

Yes, because they comapared a two-door Corsica to it not too long ago.

Why do you think Beretta was dropped after 96? It was clear rpoduct overlap in a shrinking coupe market.
