Why are we stuck in 1970?

let me say first that this isnt meant for any one person on this site but just a general question. that said, why do we still have the 1970s mentallity? we have people that will absolutely not buy the chevy hipo coupe if it isnt named Camaro. why? i dont know about anyone else, but i didnt buy my car for its name; i bought it because it offered the performance i want for the price i want to pay.

why do we still rewuire $20,000 stripper base model v8 cars? not many people are buying these cars to immediately take to the track and turn into all out track cars. 98% of us will drive these cars pretty much every day. and it may surprise some of you but NOT having those options will INCREASE the overall car price, not lower it.

i think these mentallities wont help us any with the new car.

I agree with the "stripper" thing, but I do think there should be a "value" package V8.

base value Camaro should include:
- Power windows/locks/mirrors
- Keyless entry
- CD/MP3 player
- cruise control
- A/C
- Traction control
- Rims (NO HUB CAPS )
- fancy exhust tip (no more rusty hidden turn down tips)

These are the base options that most everyone wants. I will not buy a car without these.

Please note that any form of traction control or active stability control MUST be fully defeatable. Not like the 300...

True. I've seen people write "Go back to Carb!" on this forum

Times change. I do have a sentimental feeling for the name "Camaro" though.

Re: Why are we stuck in 1970?

The thing is is that Camaro already has a following and a feeling of comradeship among other Camaro drivers. Whenever I see a Camaro I look at it, and most of the time the other driver looks back at me. Its like a "Camaro glance" or something. The ironic thing is is that the closest word to Camaro is french for friend (i dont know the actual word though).

During my summer job i was a driver for dominos. Got lots of comments (all good) about the car. I even started talking to one woman who had a 96 Z28 i believe with black stripes. We started talking about Camaros for like 15 minutes. She often said how good driving a Camaro makes you feel (and she was really passionate everytime she said that).

To sum it up there is something special about the word "Camaro" and if it isnt on the chevy performance coupe, will a definately not buy it? No, but if i do buy it, there will always be that little bit of me that was disapointed and always wish that it was called a Camaro.

Ford would *never* rename the Mustang. Chevrolet would *never* rename the Corvette. Why would it have to happen for the Camaro?

And if the 5th gen is called Chevelle, thats where my money will be parked next. The name to me is as important as the car. Camaro is what made me love cars. And if the new car is called something else, maybe its just as well for me...IROCs aren't anywhere close to what I'd dump on a 5th gen to park next to the Z...but I really, really want one.

I agree with the above standards except for traction control. Optional, fine...but NOT mandatory!!!!!!!

Re: Why are we stuck in 1970?

I tend to keep my cars a long time, and I don't like it when stuff breaks. Easy solution - only get what you really need and you will deal with fewer breaking components. It's just statistics.

Ideally I would get these options (Actually, my last few cars are pretty close to this list):

-Power Windows
-Power Locks
-Keyless
-A/C
-A Big Stereo with MP3 capability (or input)
-Manual Seats
-Manual Tilt / Telescope steering wheel
-Cloth Seats (NOT MOUSE FUR!!!)
-Traction Control / ABS / Stability Control

I would avoid:

-Heated Seats
-Navigation
-Power Seats (If they are designed right, they dont' need 5,000 adjustments. I can never get them set right anyway).
-Motorized tilt / telescope steering wheel
-HUD
-Fancy Trip Computers
-Leather Seats
-Automatic Headlights
-Automatic Transmission
-Automatic Climate Control
-Automatic Wipers
-Power Trunk Closers
-Headlight Washers

So you could say I'm stuck in the early 90's.

Re: Why are we stuck in 1970?

I didn't buy my car for the name, in fact I was pretty much dead set on that other rearwheel drive american performace car, but the Camaro came along at the right time. The fanfare my car gets is ridicolous next to G35s and 3series, it gets the compliments and its ten years old, with orange peel... Don't see how you could hope to top that.

We aren't in 1970 because in 1970 there was a Camaro, and now there is not.

Re: Why are we stuck in 1970?

GM could name it the Chevrolet POS, and if it is one of the top performing RWD V8 Coupes available on the market, I'd be all over it.

I think it's crazy when I read all the posts by you guys that say you wouldn't buy it if it's not named "Camaro".

I've read stuff like, "Even if it's 450 hp, 3000lb curbweight, and the best looking thing out there for $30k, I won't touch it if it's called something other than Camaro."

Well guess what, people with that mentality maybe be a majority on www.camaroz28.com, but they are a minority in the real world.

Give me a RWD V8 coupe with a good bang for the buck, and name it what you want. I'll still buy.
