bumper laws are stricter in Canada than the US, and GM doesn't want to spend the extra $$$ to meet them.

To elaborate further, the minimum bumper requirements in the US are 2.5mph. In Canada they are 5mph.

Now, normally this is not a problem. 99% of all cars sold in the US have 5mph bumpers BUT the GTO was designed in Austrailia which has the 2.5mph bumpers.

Since they are exporting 18K GTOs per year to the US, Canada would get roughly 10% of that, 1800 cars. To redesign and test a 5mph bumper would cost alot of money.

I know...it sucks. We'll get the next gen though

Shut up. At least we don't have CRIA suing music downloaders same as RIAA. As a matter of fact, the judge decided here that uploading and downloading is perfectly legal.

Eat that. The US is still lame. Even with your GTO.

Edit: (just to clarify)

muckz or OP,
why dont you just get the corvette c6, think of it the gto will cost around 45- 50,000 canadian, maybe 53,000 dealer markups.
for that kind of money you can spend 15,000 or 12,000 more and you can have a new 2005 corvette, thats what i am doing.

Ron Hodgeson Pontiac Buick in St. Albert bought a new '04 GTO at the Barrett Jackson auction earlier this year simply to draw interest and people into the showroom. It can't be sold in Canada due to restrictions mentioned above. What's ironic (and sad) is that there really is no GM car to steer a potential customer to if they are really interested in the GTO. I guess the closest would be a GTP Grand Prix.

If you are in the Edmonton area, do go and check the car out. Its a black 6 speed. I was very impressed with the car once you see it in person. It looks much more agressive than pictures portray. I was especially impressed with the interior - very nice compared to my '99 Hawk.

It really is unfortunate that the car is not coming to Canada sooner than '06. However, I can already see what is going to happen once the car does. Only those dealers that have sold good volumes of performance cars (i.e. F-Bodies) will get "allocation" to sell the new GTO. That means much higher markups than even US dealers are tacking on to the GTO. The same thing is happening right now with the Cadillac CTS-V and XLR - only select dealers have allocation based on previous volume...........

I've been chasing this issue for quite a while. 305fan is absolutely right. However, bringing 1,800 units into Canada with minor modifications is no biggie. We do it with the Vette. The GTO would have required extensive mods, but with mods going into the Gas Tank, Exhaust, front end, hood, etc, I think it could have been done. A 5 mph bumper is on all other Canadian GM vehicles.

I think that initial GTO figures of 20,000 included allocations for Canada. I blame GMCanada for this dropping to 18,000. As guionM knows, I have written in regards to this to the highest level(s) of GM. The President of GM Canada sent me a multi-page letter in an attempt to give closure to my pursuit of intervention by The Public Policy Committee of GM.

I have even written Aussie Gov't safety regulators ....

If you want someone to blame ...
It's GM Canada in my estimation. I am so sure of it, that I cleared my investment porfolio of all GM stock. I couldn't stand reading the annual reports about cars I couldn't buy.

We are selling Viper engined dodge trucks for $60,000 cdn, CTS-V for 70,000, surely a $45,000 GTO would sell. Frig ... my Minivan cost $40,000 and my vert was $47,000.

I'd drop $45,000 for a GTO in a second.

In the US it definitely is an American Revolution. But up here ... it's a Canadian Revulsion ...

With the way things are looking. I'll be driven a Dodge.

Ted
