WHY is there no general consensus on what the F5 should be?
I think (hope) that if (when) they make a 5th gen, as long as it's a high quality piece, the masses will be overall happy. Sure, there will be some that won't like the styling, some that won't like the seating, some that won't like the amount of power, some that won't like the rear suspension, some that won't like model designation, some that won't like anything that's just life. There is no way they can make everyone happy in anything, but if they make a quality piece with good performance and good reliability and good styling, most will be satisfied.
BTW, I'll be in the most!

There's no doubt that a new Camaro won't please everybody...I'm sure there's Mustang guys who would prefer a less retro-looking 2005 Mustang. But I think it's important that the next car embody what most of the enthusiasts want to see in terms of the most basic things. The problem I see is that there is no majority, which was the point of this thread.
In our case, Chevy may be throwing some caution to the wind..."here it is, take it or leave it" (within reason, of course). You might say that's a dangerous attitude but if I were making the decisions on styling, ride height, and content and I was reading some of this stuff on here....I'd probably have the same attitude! Like was stated earlier, perhaps if the car just looks good and performs well without having to wear the tag of "retro" or "futuristic" that will be enough.

So where in that vast spectrum of offerings is there a void? NOWHERE. There was a Camaro for somebody somewhere in there, I'm sure. If you like the upright coupe seating, you probably like the first or second gen cars. You also would likely want to see some retro in the F5 harking back to that day. If you are 19 today and have only ridden in 3rd or 4th gen cars, you are probably more keen to the all-out performance and low-slung seating positions. Since that is what Camaro embodies for you, you would want to see the F5 come back as an "evolved" F4 that is now lower, sleeker (and probably faster with no regards for a V6) and even more awesome than the F4.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, really it doesn't matter to me what they do with Camaro, as I am a Firebird guy. I probably wouldn't ever buy a Camaro over a Firebird... if only the Camaro came back I might be tempted, but would more than likely just buy a 2002 TA or Formula or save for the Corvette, which has really been the car I'v had the love affair with the longest. Honestly, I didn't really care about the F-bodies until I got my Firebird. As such, I fit perfectly with ProudPony's theory about the young guys and their fourth gens.

I scanned through this thread and noticed...
Most people have one gen they perfer over any other and want it to be that way. (Ex. Third Gen over 4th, 1st gen over 2nd and so on...)
For the most part, Mustang guys can mostly agree with the designs and aren't too picky when it comes to it.( I think they all agree that the Mustang 2 was an ugly car.)
I think we can all agree that the Camaro AND Firebird need to come back as a RWD coupe/vert with a 6.+ V8.

"Right car, right time." That was Mustang's slogan at the time, and perhaps it really was (no matter how un-classic they appear today to say the least.) Considering the time we live in now, I really hope the next Camaro is also the "Right Car".

Please both camps.
Of course, when you subdivde it into several issues... you may need to have a Buick version, a Saturn version, and a Cadillac version as well.

Boy, this little tease makes me think Cadillac CTC and the 5th Gen would be back on Sigma!

Do you really think Caddy is gonna give up its stranglehold on Sigma for a Camaro?

But...Nissan is doing this with the 350Z/G35 coupe and I think people aren't noticing. But the prices are similar. I dunno.
Why shouldn't Cadillac have a coupe in their lineup? BMW, Mercedes, Infinity, and Audi soon enough all sell coupes. A Cadillac coupe with 400+hp would be good competition against the Jag XKR, M3, and the CLK55.
Cadillac will have a coupe in their lineup in a few years I think. A CTC will be built since the CTS is such a smash. With the CTC we might eventually get a CTC-V. LS6 in a 2 and 4 door Caddy. Only if the future was now...

You're right, I doubt people who buy Cadillacs would be happy to know that a Camaro/Firebird is being built on their car's underprintings.
