Very good analogy Derek!

There was a great porsche advert once showing about 5 silver porsches over the years starting with the bathtub porsche and ending with the current design. They were positioned to clearly show the evolution over the years and how the current porsche still had a lot of similarities to the original..

The caption? Something like "You start from a clean sheet of paper only if you have nothing worth keeping"

(Of course, this was pre-cayenne. )

Hey i will be the first to admit that the new Mustang is a car to be excited over...especially if I was a Mustang guy..however is the right direction for Ford to take the Mustang backwards?

Backwards? The Mustang is now based on a new (and arguably better) platform. After years of eating Camaro dust, the Cobra gets a supercharger with a likely 400+ hp for the 06. I wouldn't call this backwards.

Sure, the Mustang takes (steals) cues from the past, but the past is what makes the Mustang a Mustang. I like the analogy Derek Smalls used to the 911 Porsche. The current 911 bears a striking resemblence to the 911's of past decades. I don't hear many retro complaints from that car.

If you think the Mustang is retro, then the 911 must be the bottom of the barrel of the retro craze.

I'm just going to come out and say it. THE MUSTANG LOOKS MODERN.

Just like the 911 analogy....a brand new 911 has a resemblance to '63 model. But park it next to any car...and there is no doubt that it is a completely modern car.

Same with the Mustang. Sure you can trace some elements to the '67 or 64 1/2 Mustang...but the new Mustang looks thoroughly modern. It's got the right proportions...it's got the right stance....these are things that make a car look new and contemporary. Heritage Mustang cues have been incorporated well, without it looking overtly retro.

They are going to sell like crazy.

Heres the thing about the 911 analogy. The car has been evolving since day one, it has never strayed from that and it does pick up new design cues with every redesign, even if they are not huge. The Mustang went on with little evolution after the 60's and went in a separate direction with each redesign. Now, Ford wants to make the car with extreamly strong simalarities to the 67' car. They want to jump back in the cars lineage. This is why it is retro and not evolutionary.

The Mustang could be the most modern car to ever come out, yet some folks wouldn't like it. It could be the most retro thing to ever come out, yet some folks wouldn't like it.

Same thing with the F-body. Someone will always not like it.

FWIW...it must suck to hate an automobile.

I believe that we are. What makes it look not modern?

The fastback roofline?

The Mustang side scoops?

The forward leaning grill shell?

These are classic Mustang themes....why wouldn't they use them?

I am as anti-retro as the next guy....but Ford pulled this one off.

They made the car lower and wider, which is what people asked for (and if i remember correctly, what most camaro owners complained about). Other than that, it is similar to the present car. Both have the sloping roofline and short trunk, side scoops, fender flares, three split taillamps. The front end is the only real "retro" throwback, imho.

You're welcome to your opinion, but I obviously hold a different one. I managed to quit hating "cars" 20+ years ago.
