Whos idea was this?
This may have been mentioned before, but I just noticed it. I was looking at official GM pictures of the GTO, and a rear shot shows that there is no dual exhaust! Just a single split tip on the left side. Now I may be wrong in my opinion, but shouldn't a modern muscle car have dual exhaust? I heard that this GTO is supposed to have a "throaty sound" to it. That may be so, but it, IMO, should be coming out of both ends. What's the opinion on these boards?

I do not know for sure, but it could be duals with both outlets on the same side...
They did that with SS F-Bodies for a year or two as well...

Whatever you saw in the pictures isnt really final yet anyways. If GM gets the feedback, theyll probably change the layout before production.

I heard it was true duals, both pipes exiting on one side. Somethign about dodging the fuel tank maybe?

For some odd reason GM refuses to put a real dual exhaust on their performance vehicles. Thats the exact reason everyone bailed on the F-bodies. Why fool with something with a clunky single exhaust system when you can buy a mustang, add headers, 2 chamber flowmasters and 2 1/2" pipe and have an awesome, thundering sound.

Exactly - duals run the lenght of the car, then exit through the same rear resonator.

With the fuel tank gone, there is plenty of room for an HSV/427-like dual outlet on both sides now. If it doesn't make it to the GTO before production, it'll likely be on the "real" one in 2005.

Man, and everyone was blaming things like lack of advertising. Crap. Call GM. Tell them that should reopen the plant with true duals on the F-bodies and then they will sell like hotcakes. LOL!!
LOL
That had pretty much nothing to do with it. A larger diameter single exhaust with dual outlets can sound better then real dual exhaust, and it can make good power. IMO F-Bodies have always sounded better than M*****gs single exhaust or not, except maybe the LS1. That engine might make great power with its single exhaust, but it doesn't sound as good as the SBC's like L98's, LT1's, and engines before, even some 305's.
I couldn't believe it when I heard my friend's 35th SS with the stock SLP exhaust on it, I've heard 2.8's with aftermarket mufflers and larger pipes that sounded more "businesslike." The only time I heard an LS1 that was OK was 1 with a chambered 1st Gen Z28 muffler.
