when will cat convertors be a thing of the past

I read an article about a year ago that said in the near future Gm would have such efficient engines that catalytic convertors will be gone forever. I have no problem with them except you can't run longtube headers legally. Does anybody here have any info when they will be eliminated.

probably not in our lifetime. unless they are made much smaller and incorporated in the head on a per-cylinder bases or something like that. lets say GM does develope a really clean engine, the cats might not have to be as big but having them will make the emissions cleaner even still. besides, you think emissions standards are going to stop advancing? on the plus side, we might actually see true zero emissions IC engines some time in the future.

The irony of catalytic converters is that they are not a cure-all. They are a band aid, but they come with a price. Research has shown that while catcons work well to reduce smog-causing emissions, they actually INCREASE ozone-depleating emissions. You trade off improvements at one level of the atmosphere in exchange for worsening the situation at the higher level.

Save the Ozone layer, ditch the catalytic converters!!! LOL
