Whats with the large wheels sizes?

this is something ive noticed in a lot of concepts as well as design pictures. the wheels (back most notibly) are HUGE. im talking 20+ inches. now, yes some look good but the tires have to be expensive. why are they suddenly so big? and i hope to god the "Coupe" doesnt have wheels that large. it would make tire changes astronomical.

C6 has 19's out back. Mustang GT has 18's optional, and even the little cobalt SS will have 18's as options as well.

Now that i think of it, 20's don't seem as large as they used to. Remember when 17's where considered BIG? I guess times have changed.

Btw: ontop of price for tires, you should also mention added weight of all that alloy, rubber, and some cases chrome.

Keep in mind, those are just concepts, the real car will usually not have 20+ wheels. But Times are changing, and I'm sure we will eventually see 20" wheels on cars, atleast as an option.

its the automotive equiv to high-heel shoes.

I can't really see why there is really any reason for anything over 18" or 19" for the cars that have massive 14" brake rotors.

most people have them for looks. any time i see some of those low profile tires i just laugh, know there is no way they can drive any where near the capacity of the tires. people if put them on their cars as hope that they will make their 1/4mile times better. most people also aren't aware of the rotating mass and the effects on braking (stock brakes). they only help is in general they are wider, but the rubber isn't designed that way. to each his own i guess.

SSR has 19x8 in front and 20x10 in the rear. Not really a high production vehicle, but just thought I'd mention it.

i actually didn't know that, thanks
i saw a black one around here (had a stupid ricer wing on it but..) other than the wing, itlooked pretty sweet
i think the wheels fit it nice, since it's a bigger car/truck
now the new vette with 18/19, that sort of looked a little odd at naias
i liked the look of the actual wheels but, they seemed a little large for a smaller car like the vette

Your also forgetting the Silverado SS that has 20's, and if I'm not mistaken the Slade should be getting them as an option as well later this year (if not already).
I feel however, that rim's bigger than 20's on a truck really begins 2 look silly (Almost like wagon wheels yeee haaaw).

Siverado has 9 different 20" Rim choices

22" are the biggest I'd ever want to see on a truck, like on the SRT-10
