What's happening with the Cobra concept?
It was envisioned as the next "collector" car from Ford.
The idea was to use much of the hardware from the Ford GT, and it would have been far cheaper to produce than even the GT (which was funded by donations from other departments within Ford, ie: voluntary donations from the budgets of Ford's autoshows, R&D, design studio, advertising, etc...).
What killed it was lukewarm public reaction (personally, I loved the thing).
Ford's GR-1 was more successful. It also would have cost a pittence to make, would have made some serious bank per car (again, based on the already paid Ford GT structure) if it sold for the same price as the GT. It died when Ford started killing off spending on everything from SVT to Lincoln's "ultra" luxury car.
Ironically, the GR-1 would be coming out between now and the fall, which would have given Ford a serious shot in the arm image-wise as the GT did. Big difference is that now, Ford really needed it.

The Cobra concept was awful. The GR-1 was ok, in a '70's-exotic sort of way.
Now that Ford is 12 billion in the hole for 2006, I don't think they could be piddling around with low volume exotics even if they did make some money.
