What would it take to create a new Z28?
What would it take to create a new Z28?
If Chevy builds a new Vette (C6) that does a 12.2, 115 1/4 mile (and who knows what the Z06 version might do), and an SS sedan that does a 13.4, 108 1/4, and it looks like this is possible, where do you sandwich a 5th gen Z28? 12.7, 112? How fast is fast? And what do you aim for?--gut crushing accel, road course handling? I mean, if the 430 HP SS gets built, into what niche do you put a Z28?
Your thoughts?
Your thoughts?
I have seen lots of posts taking a piece of the issue. I just hadn't seen it put the way I put it, i.e. what niche would you put a Z28 in if you wanted to build it? Most threads I saw say something like the SS sedan means no new Camaro. But hey, whatever.
The gauntlet has already been laid as far as which benchmarks need to be hit.
Chassis dynamics as good or better than Nissans FM chassis (350Z, G35, etc.) and the next Mustang. The current Mustang can be had with an underrated 390hp....with 400+ rumored for the '05 Mustang.
To be a REAL Z/28.....it will require world class ride and handling, stunning road course lap times, and 12 sec. quarter mile times.
They know what they need to......let's hope they don't let us down.

Other than that, I agree with you.
At this point, i'd be happy with a 3000-3200 lb 2+2 car with good weight balance, a 350 hp LS1 V8, a good 6 speed manual trans, excellent front suspension, and a bullet proof well designed IRS, good brakes (12.6" rotors and z06 calipers) quality parts and assembly, inside and out. starting at $20k, well equipped for $25k MSRP. No fancy options.
Basically, an evolution of the 4th gen.. except slightly lighter, slightly less overhangs, well designed IRS, and better build quality and interior.
Something like that would perform similar to a C5 vette at a half the pricepoint. A good platform that performs well stock, but would be an awesome platform to add on performance without having to "reengineer" everything, with a low entrance fee.

hmmm.here is a good theory.Ive been tossing around if you think about it...for the Z28 to be true to ite heritage..take it out of the limelight..for a 5th gen.lets have the base V6, and return the V8 to the RS with a LS1 in it and minor diffrences than the V6 or the SS..maybee spoiler or front area....and the SS..with all the do dads and show stopper image..with stripes and such....then................
The Z28..is what the 1LE is/was..replace the 1LE with the Z28 moniker.. have it as the base model look but with the SS go fast parts and handling..stripped for the road course...with plain aluminum SS wheels and stuff but no SS interior and high end stuff.and no flash....just Z28 badges on the fenders and grill
and thats where you get the fast Z28 with the half the cost of a SS..both will sell..and you figure if people that want the "status" of a SS will go for it and have a fast car..but the people that want a race ready Z28 just as fast..they go for that..and both will be limited production cars with high value to what they represent
would of sold more 1LE cars if it was a Z28 I think..Z28 was that option code back then..now its just another level of trim in the line up..
1LE= Z28...
