What I think a 5th gen should be!

The next Cobra will have 500hp and realistically , I doubt GM will try to compete at the Cobra level with the Camaro . Ford has already stated its going after the M3 and vette with the Cobra , most likely the top level GTO( zeta ) is what GM will use to battle the cobra .

I know about the Cobra vs. Camaro thing, I just had my competitive hormones flowing there. Would be so cool to stick it to the Cobra with a ZL1 though (without power adders) And a GTO against the Cobra? I doubt the GTO will ever go that far and I also think it weighs too much. But hey whatever works, ya know? And I also don't see the Cobra making 500 hp or hanging with the Z06. Didn't they learn from the Cobra R?
Thanks for the welcoming too, I appreciate it!

Well yes it does, but I think more so than being "top dog" it matters that the Z/28 sticks to what it used to be...a factory "race car"

I lurked here for the longest time. I read every post for probably months or years before I ever posted. It was the revisionist history, I saw developing....regarding Z/28....that finally made me post. After that first post.....STAND BACK!!!...the flood gates opened!
PS
I didn't know how to type until I started posting here.
I like them to, until they get to a certain level when the all-out arguing over any little thing happens. But to the original poster, never feel like you can't state your opinion, if the Z28 is what you want to see as the top car, you are free to say it. (rumor has it you can even put it in your sig
)
)
LOL...I love you guys!
Anyways I would just like the Z/28 to be top dog because that's how it started. Lots of cars get the SS moniker, and that's never a bad thing (when used properly) but the Z/28 to me always meant RACE CAR FOR THE STREET!
Either way as long as the SS and the Z/28 come back along with the 5th gen I'll be happy. I won't lose any sleep if the SS is top dog.
P.S: If Chevy did it the way I wanted, the ZL1 would be top dog
and the cobra would be

Cobra weighs 3664lbs
GTO weighs 3725 lbs
Also, if anyone is interested, Mustang Cobras put out about 425 ACTUAL SAE horsepower (not that 390 Ford advertizes).
To those of you who think every single GM LS engine is greatly overrated (they aren't, only the final couple of years of the F-body's LS1 was), the Z06 puts out exactly the 405 horsepower GM advertizes it at.

Wow from what I heard they made the GTO out to be a boat, I guess it's really not that heavy after all.
Anyways the LS1 was only in the F-body for 4 years (98-02) and from what I understand the only change was the switch LS6 intake manifold before the 2001 model year, other than that I believe they are all the same.
I've seen numerous LS1 F-bodies from all years put down around 290-302 hp at the wheels on a dyno...and in the GMHTP issue about the free mods, the LS1 Trans Am put down 290 hp with an automatic, which has more drivetrain loss. This was taking on SLP's state of the art dynometer, so I'm more inclined to believe their findings, but I'll check out the link u posted anyways.

As for the Firebird, I've heard it's gone for good, Camaro or no Camaro, but I've also heard it may come out as Pontiac's version of the Vette. I personally doubt both, I think that both the Camaro and the Firebird will be back.
I don't see the 1st gen Z/28 as top dog. At least not in the fastest in a striaght line sense.
A 375hp/396CID culd surely beat one. Put them on road course and it would of course be a different story.
Anyhow--I am all for the Z/28 returning and being what a Z06 is to the regular Corvette.
Your aiming to low for the 270hp 5.3L you suggest---it puts out 290hp now---they won't detune it.
Other wise pretty sound ideas

305fan,
I guess your right about the first gens, it's more of a perception thing or whatever. I don't have the acceleration numbers on hand, but I actually believe the Z/28 was quicker also because the DZ 302 was WAYYYYYY underrated. Sure the low end power was almost non existent but it was still quick and also had 4:10 gears. But as you stated, it's pretty much what you value more, speed or quickness.
I might be wrong about the SS vs. Camaro thing though, I'll have to check on that.
That was my mistake about the 5.3 liter too. I just figured 270 would be a nice number. 290 works even better

Oh yea, Id like to see the engine badging come back... like the GTO seems to be trying to do. But in the case of the 5.3... I think a 327 badge sounds more intimidating than 5.3, and it would also have some heritage to the 1st gen 327. the Z/28 definetly needs an engine badge. 6.0L, LS2, or XXXci ( i dont know the ci of the 6.0)would all work.
To try to steer this away from the SS vs. Z28 debate…..
First of all Welcome to the Board Florida_Z28_Boy!
Just to answer one of your 5th gen wishes, all models should get IRS standard. It won’t be an option; you may even see an AWD version.
The new Camaro should be off a version of the new RWD platform called Zeta.
I’m also a supporter of the Z28 being the top dog! I couldn’t help saying it!

I certainly hope we don't have IRS standard on an F-body.
An AWD F- body?!?
I hope, for everyone's sake, you're wrong.
P.S I also think all F-bodies should have TRUE DUALS from the factory. Mustangs get dual exhaust, GTO's get duals, why don't we? Come on GM, I know you can do it! Y-pipes suck!
