What does the 5th gen need to have?
What does the 5th gen need to have?
What are some things that the 5th gen needs to have to make it a home run? Outside of 720384038hp and styling, things like seats, dashboard, guages, radio, and anything else that you would think would go well with this car. Be reasonable, but think of some things that could really bring some attraction to the car after the hp and styling shock goes away.
ALL of that is important. There needs to be OPTIONS. To be able to make your car look different from the other thousands of models on the road. Customization right from the factory, add-ons, etc., to keep it interesting. I'd have every model available with it's own unique optional striping. For example:
Z28: Racing stripes.
SS: (higher model) Fender to door stripes.
SS: (lower model) Front bumper stripes.
RS: Lower body striping.
Base: Regular pinstriping.
I'd also like to see exhaust options, Regular and Performance Exhaust. Obviously the standard would be low and there to get the job done, but performance would be louder and of course make more power. Or you could even run an optional dual or single exhaust on all models which in itself would affect sound and performance too.
Wheel and tire options, interior customization, such as leather wrapping option on some models, colors, seats, shifters, pedals, and so on. There has to be different bumpers and taillights for certain models, spoilers, hoods, upgrades for anything possible, engine, rear axle, chrome/stainless tips, different emblems, etc.! Let there be a "standard look and style" but let people change things if they want, there'll be people wanting to buy both. Some like a more factory look and some like custom, it will attract alot of buyers. Keep prices right, bring the aftermarket right to the customers. The car could definetly use factory support and interest. Show everyone that the car is important and here to really compete.

It needs a factory, too...
It needs to be better than the new Mustang in at least several categories and competitive with other competition - everything from Z-cars to Minis. It should also be affordable.... and it needs a business case that works.
A tall order, yes... but look at C5/6.

a) V8
b) 4 seats
c) 2 doors
d) RWD
e) T-tops
I was first against T-tops, but then yesterday the weather was nice, I took the tops off and blasted my '95 Z28 around town.
Damn I had forgotten what a rush that was and how fast my car actually is.

Better use of interior room (4th Gen is as big as Impala on the outside, smaller than Aveo on the inside)
T-Tops or Targa
More large rim options (no more 16" or hub caps)
XM/6 disc changer - speakers that arn't made of paper.
The ability to change speakers without having to take the door panel off.
Paddle shifters on the 6 speed automatic.
Thicker steering wheel.
side mirrors with parking assist.
MORE SOUND INSULATION I love the sound of the exhust but I don't want to hear that loud drone when the windows are up.
Dual climate control (standard on Impala)

Besides the obvious (RWD, V8, 2+2, Camaro-like styling) I hope it's got some great quality. I hope it's solid and rattle free. I hope the switch gear feels quality. I hope the interior is quality. The GTO has alot of these atributes from what I understand (I haven't seen one in person) and I hope the Camaro follows suit.
options not packages for one thing
T-Tops
6 disc indash cd changer
paddle shift on the auto is a pretty cool idea
NO HUB CAPS
navigation (as an option)
adjustable magnetic ride (option)
steering wheel audio controls (those are really nice)
6 speed manual is an obvious
V8.
Superb handling
perfection

Re: What does the 5th gen need to have?
A complete rethink.
Last night I hooked up with some of my Camaro Club pals at a local cruise. We started talking about some of the areas that the last Camaro failed in. Fabulous drivetrain to be sure....but pretty blah everywhere else. Way too big on the outside, cramped "feeling" on the inside, non-descript interior, Z/28's that look like Budget Rent-A-Cars.
Twenty feet in front of us was an orange '04 Mach 1. We went over to check it out and talk to the owner. We commented on it's nice tidy exterior dimensions, it's cool specific wheels, it's really neat interior....and just the overall appeal of the package.
It was at that moment that we all knew why Mustang exists and Camaro is on "hiatus".

Yes, they make every model distinct, something the Camaro used to know.
I don't know if the 4th Gens had such a fabulous drivetrain as a whole. An engine with great potential yes, (and piston slap!/LS1, then leaking and opti-spark!/LT1) the transmissions were pretty good, but the rear axles?
