What do you think will bring an end to this performance era...notably RWD performance
Honda is rumored to be developing a sub-400hp Hybrid engine for the next gen NSX which will have an electric motor up front and the gasoline engine out back.
With todays tech, anything is possible. A car can be economical and still have good performance. Who knows what new tech will be available 10-20 years from now. Performance doesn't have to die, but it will have to slow down. The current Hp increases are almost rediculous. By 2005, there'll be 2 500+hp trucks in the market

DEMOCRATS & LIBERALS!!!

The 55mph speed limit, & CAFE happened through a Republican President, & recent efforts to increase CAFE & the push to fuel cell technology happened when conservative Republicans have both houses of congress & the Presidency. States regained the right to set their own speed limits under Democrats, and the car industry saw their longest run without alot of new major regulations under a democratic President.
"Tree Huggers" are primarily a northern California phenomenon, and even Ronald Reagan when he was governor here signed some of the most "liberal" enviromental legislation in the country at that time. Politics is a "local" game, and politicians look after their own districts 1st and foremost, not labels.
Let's be a little more responsible, and realize that politcians of both parties (this means both parties) love to resort to painting the other in the worse possible way while ignoring their own stupidity and devious things they do.
All just so they can round up the votes of unthinking, lazy, easily stirred up individuals who feel voting is simply a spectator sport.
(Sorry, stupid political generalizations get me worked up
)

I guess the exception proves the rule, huh?
Whoever is president or governor at the time is only one small piece the puzzle since one has to take into consideration the political bias and/or tendencies of the legislator, senate, and etc. In politics there is alot of compromising and often republican leaders have to pander to democrats and vice-versa in order to get their own political agenda through to apease their own constituents.
I dont mind the "political football" between those of opposing political parties (it might be messy but the system works) as long as they dont destroy our love for cars and our love of driving them in the process.
