GM is definitely trending up and Toyota is definitely trending down. Have they actually crossed paths yet? I'm not sure anybody will know until the cars that are out right now get some more age and miles on them. Will it be normal to see 08 Malibus with 300k miles on them and Camrys lucky to make it to 150k? It just sounds unlikely to me but we'll see.

More importantly it's unreasonable to expect the average uneducated consumer's perception to be changed this quickly.

Meaning GM needs to keep this up for at least a few years longer.

And yet their financial troubles have me really concerned about how their product lineup is going to look in 2-4 years from now when the things that are having their development affected by cuts right now will be ready to come out. Toyota isn't experiencing those kinds of pressures so their R&D department is running at full swing and likely getting an earful from their superiors for the recent issues they've been having. In other words I think Toyota will be back on the upswing in a few more years so this may be GM's only chance to strike, and what a bad time for it to come during these financial troubles.

This is where I was originally going. Are these devices really necessary? Are people really that annoyed by a little clicking? How much R&D time and dollars are spent to put these in cars? How much does it increase the cost? No wonder cars are so damn expensive these days.

"General Motors fell behind Toyota as the world's largest automaker, selling 8.35 million vehicles globally last year compared to the Japanese giant's 8.97 million, sales figures showed Wednesday. "

1.35 (recalled this time from several years)/8.97 (total sold last year) = .015 - so it's actually closer to 15% than 10, but I was just doing head-math estimations in my first post, thinking 1MM/10MM = 10%.

How's bout them apples... Toyota is not in a good trend over the last 2-5 years IMO.
so we're comparing multiple years worth of recalls to one year's production numbers for an inflated statistic. ok, makes more sense now. continue the regularly scheduled toyota bash fest
