Those who vote probably don't own LSx motors. They don't live with them and realize what great power they make as well as being almost as fuel efficient as a 'high tech' V6.

I have a cammed LS1 and know its virtues. I wouldn't own anything else.

Y'know, I've been giving this Wards 10 best thing some thought. I think its a conspiracy! We should get the Feds invovled! A few congressional hearings, some serious debate, put some legislation into action and problem solved.

...a range of customer drivability factors such as horsepower, torque, technical relevance to the vehicle, and low levels of noise, vibration and harshness. Now in its twelfth year, Ward's 10 Best Engines was created as a way to recognize superior performance and showcase the critical importance of powertrain technology and excellence in engine engineering.
I think now in its 12th year, Wards should take a look and revamp their criteria then. In many ways their factors are going against each other. Like how a lot of companies are spending massive effort into getting specific engine noises into the cabin and others out. A deep growl out of a Hemi powered anything comes as a standard feature - yet that would drop a Hemi right off the criteria because it breaks the low noise requirement.

I also dont see development # requirements on that list - and the Turbo I6 BMW motor isnt exactly a high development engine, so no other engine should be eliminated because of it.

In terms of "technical relevance" i think the 5.3L in the sedans shot off its own foot in a way - the car has violent tq steer and a LOT of power for front wheel drive. Its honestly overpowered and that in a way might have pulled it from the list.

The Direct Injection Ecotec has no reason to be OFF that list.

The 3.5L Duratec has no reason to be ON that list. The engine isnt high tech, isnt as smooth as the 3.6L v6 GM makes (or the Nissan/Toyota engines) and doesnt have incredible hp or tq numbers to put it up there.

I'd say they need to pull the noise requirement off the list. You cant add emissions or fuel economy though, as those would instantly hammer larger engines for no good reason. V8's arent intended to be as fuel efficient as a 1.8L economy engine.

But again, people shouldnt get all in a huff over Wards. You'd be better off going after how rediculous consumer reports is......

the ls1 made the list in 1998, the ecotec made the list last year...i think the lsx is a great engine series, but its also relatively unchanged since 1997. the duratec 3.5 is a great new engine for ford and is going to be the platform for alot of new variants do i can see it being on the list, the ls2 was a runner up in 2005 and even wards said they didnt know how it didnt make the list

I hate lists like these from the "experts" , but for those worried about it GM should have 2 or 3 on that list next year for 2008 .

LS3
DI 3.6
....possibly the LNF

Hasn't the 3.5L V6 from Nissan made the list for who knows how long?
Why should the length of time that it's been out make a difference?
The LSx line is still unparalleled in terms of performance and mileage. Simply put, even with its long run, it still isn't beat (though the Ford V8 puts on an impressive showing.

The 2.0L Supercharged ecotec engine code is LSJ. And it did make the list last year.

Yes...the Nissan VQ3.5L has made the list since the list's inception so no, the length of time it's been out/been on the list, etc is not an issue.

You make me smile.

Funny how tech-minded people vary so much from word-scramblers, isn't it?

By the way, what does "piston-slap" mean?

I saw that somewhere when I was reading, and the JOURNALIST who wrote it did not clearly define what it was or how it happens for me ( the engineer).

Just having some fun this morning! J/K around - don't anybody light the molotovs...

You know, when you do something your engine doesn't like, like it give some bad gas and your engine gets all pissed off and says "I told you beyotch no 87 octane, now I'm gonna half'ta put a piston slap on you"!
