VW forced to stop selling diesel cars in 2007
VW forced to stop selling diesel cars in 2007
no more TDI's until at least 2008

Due to upcoming changes in diesel emissions standards, Volkwagen will be forced to suspend sales of several of its diesel models for 2007 - an unfortunate turn of events for the German automaker, given the robust demand for its TDI-powered vehicles (which are for all practical purposes the only affordable diesel passenger cars currently available in the US).
Gone for 2007 will be the Golf, Jetta, and Beetle TDI models. Extra supplies of the 2006 Passat diesel will be shipped over to the US in coming months, which VW hopes will provide sufficient supply well into 2007. A Touareg diesel is on its way as well (for the second time). A new emissions-compliant TDI Jetta will return to the market for 2008, but the fate of the other models isn't currently clear.

F*CK F*CK F*CK!!!!!

45 mpg city and a car that can get 300 pound feet of torque with a chip...great now they're going to stop making them.
They're like half the Canadian market; i wonder if it's a u.s only thing? Way to go enviormentalists.

Thank goodness for low sulfur fuel.

Yes, VW should have planned ahead - it was known these standards were coming - but you have to give them some props for being the ONLY company selling diesel cars in the U.S. for five model years. The next generation diesel powerplants will only get better and low sulfer diesel will make them cleaner than ever.

Re: VW forced to stop selling diesel cars in 2007
How much forwarning have they had of these changes in standards?
If very little I might suspect government conspiracy to slow sales of fuel efficient foriegn vehicles.
If they've had a lot of forwarning then they've got nobody to blame but themselves.
Either way it's bad timing.
My brother in law has a '04 VW Jetta diesel - it is seriously lacking in power but he does get damn good milage. Then again really no better milage than a basic gas powered civic (45-50 mpg highway)

Civic is rated at 7.8 L per 100 km city and 5.7 L per 100 km highway.
Previous gen golf/jetta was rated under 6 L per 100 km city and under 5 L per 100 km highway. The new Jetta's numbers are a tiny bit higher, but they are still well below Civic's.
The two are way off.

The Duramax will still be around, as will the Cummins in the Dodge (I think it is switching to a newer version of the ISB, though, with more displacement), and I'm sure the Navistar/Powerstroke in the Fords will be here too. Plenty of development work has been done to get them where they need to be.
It is a big headache for all the big diesel guys too (Caterpillar, Cummins, MBE/Detroit Diesel, Navistar, Volvo/Mack, etc.). I'm not sure why VW is taking the year off, but I'm fairly sure there are going to be some angry truckers next year when their trucks become more expensive because of the extra equipment required to meet the standards.
Re: VW forced to stop selling diesel cars in 2007
Everyone in the industry has known this has been coming for YEARS. Both the heavy and light vehicle laws have been in the works for a long time. There are technical bugs in the systems that still need working out, but even more than that I think that manufacturers have been hoping that their lobbying efforts could continue to push back the start date for years more. It seems that's not going to happen so now they're scrambling.
No conspiracy... just business as usual.
Any truckers planning purchases over the next 3 years or so are all buying now so they'll be grandfathered into the old rules. The real pain won't start in trucking for a while.
