UAW chief says no health-care deal in works with Chrysler
It will be interesting to see how this plays out with Ford and GM issues with a UAW and vice versa.

DETROIT (MarketWatch) -- United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger said Thursday that the union currently has "no deal" with DaimlerChrysler AG's (DCX) Chrysler Group related to heath-care concessions, despite a series of media reports suggesting a tentative agreement has been forged.
Gettelfinger, in an interview following a speech to the Detroit Economic Club, said that "there is no deal, no deal" with Chrysler because the UAW does not see a financial need for concessions at the No.3 U.S. auto maker. Local UAW officials, representing workers at various Chrysler facilities in the U.S, had been told that a tentative pact had been agreed upon between the UAW and Chrysler and the union leadership would discuss the agreement at a meeting on Friday.
Gettelfinger confirmed there is a meeting for Chrysler-UAW officials on Friday, but said "they got bad information" when asked why local officials believed a tentative deal had been struck and that the entire Chrysler UAW-represented workforce would potentially vote on the deal next week.
In a meeting with reporters, Gettelfinger said the UAW and Chrysler will continue to meet "on various issues." However, UAW financial analysis of Chrysler proves that at this time, the auto maker is not in need of cost concessions on par with those given to General Motors Corp. (GM) and Ford Motor Co. (F) in 2005.
"We were looking for a way we could perhaps address some of their concerns, but we did not find a responsible path to follow," Gettelfinger said in relation to Chrysler's request for heath-care related cost concessions.

Re: UAW chief says no health-care deal in works with Chrysler
Unless I'm mistaken, Chrysler makes a greater percentage of their North American vehicles in Canada & Mexico than does Ford or GM.
Canada has national health care, and although I'm not sure if Mexico even mandates health care coverage, it most certainly is far cheaper than it is here in the US.
I'm guessing Chrysler isn't as hurt by the costs as much as GM and Ford (in that order), so they aren't under the gun as much to force a deal with the UAW.

Ohhh- the benefits of outsourcing
America's prosperity is such a double-edged sword IMO.
On one hand it has allowed Americans to have a more affluent lifestyle and has given us extra money to buy 'fun' stuff but more importantly it has given us more independence and freedom.
On the other hand our prosperity has made America a 'very' expensive place to do business and has directly caused US-made products to become too expensive for other poorer countries to buy, which only contributes to making our trade deficit even worse.
