If You Thought the New Lincoln Navigator Looked Bad on the Outside, Take a Look In

Did they dig that instrument cluster out of wharehouse of left over Lincoln parts from the 70s? Look at the voltage, fuel, temp, oil pressure gages lined up across the top, then the squared off speedo and tach, bad all around.
I think Car & Driver's Verdit quote from the comparision test in the Oct. 2006 issue, where the Navigator placed last sums it up best "What are they thinking"
Ford is in some serious trouble, if all there premium products are turning out like this.

This is an example of a good idea turned horrid.
I can see what they were trying to do, and they actually pull it off well in the Zephyr and to a large degree in the MKX. But in this instance, the guages look like an afterthought.... but worse!
Those 4 small guages are just as hard to read today as they were in the 60s & 70s. But at least in those days, the small guages had a stylistic purpose. In this instance, it's like the nail in the coffin. There's so much you can do in that space that would keep the design theme but would be far better looking, it doesn't take much imagination.
Navigator is another example of where Ford held the leadership position, then let it go to waste. The Navigator was THE first US luxury SUV. It raked up sales, took a leadership position, and left Cadillac flatfooted. Like the Lincoln LS, Ford had a model that blazed new ground, handed the competition it's head when it 1st tried to compete. But instead of investing to keep ahead, Ford let the thing stangnate.
Now comes worse than that..... throw-away, half-hearted, redesign efforts.
How the mighty has fallen.

Good idea, hideous execution. It started like this.

And now we have the above... They need to take a couple steps back... Im firmly convinced this interior design can work... Problem is you're going for Tiffany look with a TJ-Maxx budget.

I can say (for the first time I can recall) that Ford doesn't make a single car I would actually pay to drive- not a rental much less a purchase.

I'm no Nasser fan, but Lincoln was much better and focused back when he and J. Mays (who has all but pulled out of North America design) were guiding Lincoln's direction via PAG.

I can say that I like the choice of the wood color, and the use of brushed chrome combined with bright chrome... but the entire styling and layout is just horrendous.

They could have done ALOT better with that as a jumping off point. That concept does not look bad

I might be biased, since one of the coolest looking products I've worked on ended up in the '05-'06 Nav, but I think that Ford took a huge step backwards with this redesign. Pictures don't really show just how cheap everything feels. I saw it at the press intro at the Chicago show and was horrified.

Ugh. WTH is happening to Lincoln? I dont like their new interior design at all
It started when I sat in a Zephyr at the auto show and doesnt look to be getting any better
