Well saab makes turbo cars, but how many people know that GM owns saab? and they dont make a cheap turbo 4 coupe for the younger people to buy. If the cobalt and solstice came out turbocharged they would sell so many of them they wouldnt be able to make enough. Look at grand ams... I work a ta a pontiac dealer, and we get sooooooo many grand ams in that are owned by kids. you make the base SE grand am 2.2 ecotec NA. instead of a v6 for the grand am GT just make the 2.2 ecotec turbo. they would sell a ton! youd see grand ams out there takin out srt4's and ****ty civics. hell someone would even make a ****in super grand am that ran with z06 vettte viper supras.. hell if gm threw a damn 5 speed in the grand ams they would sell a helluva lot more. God gm needs to just take a chance.

A lot of younger drivers (and even people into their 20's) consider a supercharger to be kinda "old fashioned", just like they veiw pushrods as "old fashioned". It is, unfortunately, the trend lately.

so because a car has a turbo makes it a sales success???
There is alot more to it then that. A lot of prople could care less if thes NA, S/C or turbo---they just want some giddy-up.

So your saying that superchargers suck, no one in there 20's would ever buy a supercharged car and GM is losing marketshare because of this???
GM lost lots of ground because they totally ignored the sport compact car market. The Coblat SS and SS S/C is there first attempt and it looks like they have a good shot at getting some sales.
If you can show me 10 die hards that would take a turbocharger over a supercharger (not even taking into consideration the REST of the car) I could show you a thousand people who just don't care.
What if the WRX Sti were supercharged? Would all the would be owners drop it fomr the list and go buy the EVO??
Not everyone mods their car. I don't care how a car makes its power as long as it has enough for me.
Someone--more knowlegeable then me, should make up a pro and con list of superchargers VS turbos!

1. no boost lag
2. cheaper to manufacture??
Turbochargers
1. full boost from spool up to redline.
2. no parasitic losses to drive turbo, free power
3. easier to intercool, makes them more efficient
4. there is a huge aftermarket with many turbos available for turbo kits. Like I posted before, for the Evo, which they sell only 3-400 a month, there is already 4-5 well developed turbo kits on the market, some with 3-5 options on what turbo you want depending on your wants and needs. For $2500, your making 400+ hp at the wheels.
Face it: this car is a sport compact, and targeted at sport compact fans. Truth is, these compact car fans would much rather have turbo's instead of blowers. This is a FACT....no arguing it.
Why? quite simple: the sport compact market and fans demands it. For this reason, i think the Ecotec needs to be turbocharged.

Sorry but large car manufactuers do not generally target groups under 1000. (only in those cases where they have to build a specifed number to be eligible for a racing series)
That would make no economic sense to do so and be so cost prohibitive. Even Dodge wised up---orginally forecasting 1000 Neon SRT-4s they have since upped that quite a bit.
So RiceEating5.0,
100 % of all sport compact buyers want a turbo---and thats a fact? I think its your opinion and a very large blanket statement at that. I am not saying things like that, just that I think just because you two guys think everyone loves turbos and GM has suffered becuase of that is going a bit far.
Statements like:
What if the WRX Sti were supercharged? Would all the would be owners drop it fomr the list and go buy the EVO??
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You better believe it.
You cannot prove that. So why do you say it?
I did say ALL would be owners---and that is impossible to prove and that is a fact.
If someone was looking at a Cobalt SS supercharged and some import that was turboed a buyer would most likley look at each car as a whole. They might find things they like about each of them but eventually have to chose.

I don't recall saying "100% of all sport compact buyers want a turbo"
. Way to twist my words. My thoughts reflect the "general conscious" within the world of sport compacts. And YES, the popularity of the turbo in this segment is much higher than that of the supercharger. No real argument there.
Case in point, how many aftermarket blower options can one get on a civic? How about turbo options? Or how many blown civics do you see in relation to turbo civics? hmm, some food for thought. The turbo cars as well as the turbo options would be more. Why? because they're more popular in this segment.
Man.... people who dont want a turbocharged car can buy the base model, you should have read what i posted. 2.2 NA SE grand am,
2.2 Turbo GT grand am.
so the people who actually want a faster car, can get the turbo, and people will actually buy them and mod them, making them "cool" to own, and making them sell a helluva lot better. A supercharger is cool, just keep it on the v8. turbos can give the lil 4 cyl soo much more potential. Not all people will mod the car to run 11's. But people just like knowing that it can be done with their car. And subura makes the Impreza as 3 models, Super turbo STI Mild turbo WRX and NA RS... and they sell pretty damn well. Give the lil GM turbo car a 5 speed and watch the sales rake in. People want turbos, but people dont want to go buy the kit and put it on themselves. Look at the SRT4. Let the factory supply mod kits and watch the sales skyrocket for the 4 cyl that can turn 12s. The supercharger is cost effective, and easier to produce. But people want the flexability of the turbo. Besides turbo BOV
anyway, gm should realize this when they watch the sales of the SRT4.
