Toyota's NA vehicle production was flat in 2006
Finally some 'not so great' news about Toyota. If this article was about GM I'm sure the article would have been longer and far more negative.
All the headlines over the last year would have made you believe that Toyota's North American production doubled over the last 12 months.
Does anyone know who many vehicles GM produces annually in North America?

ERLANGER, Ky. (AP) - Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America Inc. said Wednesday its 2006 North American vehicle production was largely flat compared with the year before, while engine production rose 10 percent.
Toyota said its North American factories produced 1.55 million vehicles and 1.43 million engines in 2006.
The automaker said it expects to increase its North American vehicle capacity by 470,000 units to 2 million units in 2008 through a variety of expansion projects.

I guess North American production and sales were two different things.
The one upside I can see about Toyota is they appear to be increasing their North American assemblies which means more cars and trucks we are buying that were before built offshore, will be built here. Allbeit of the same parts, but a positive for working Americans none the less.
Is Ford still outsourcing more work overseas to China?

Hello all.
I really wasn’t planning to post any longer but perhaps on a few issues, I can lend some insight without making everyone mad at me.
The 2006 North American automotive market and total vehicle production was down compared to 2005; final numbers haven’t been released yet but last I heard, it looks like around 500,000 less vehicles were produced in 2006.
However, in terms of market share (not to be confused with the number of vehicles produced), Toyota significantly increased its share of the market, and Honda and Nissan had a slight (very slight) bump up in share…I believe all other nameplates lost market share.
Stats can get very confusing and terms used in the automotive undustry even more so; especially if everyone isn’t using the same terms or don’t understand some of the differences between them.
Now, the numbers above are all preliminary so don’t beat me up if things don’t turn out exactly the way I noted above…I expect everyone to release their final numbers soon.
I hope that helps some.

Sure there's a difference between overall sales and NA production since a lot of Toyota vehicles are still made in Japan, but if GM sales were up and NA production was flat or down the media/press would only focus on NA production. Im not saying it's wrong for the press to be 'over-critical' but they should should treat Toyota the same way they treat GM.
