However, the Matrix is the cousin of the Pontiac Vibe. It may be based on the Corolla, but that's like combining the sales of the old Astro and Blazer. It doesn't make sense...one is a 7-passenger van and the other is a 5-passenger SUV. The Matrix is kind of a quasi-crossover with a hatch, and the 'Rolla is a 4-door sedan.
I agree with what you are saying, but the official names are what they are, Camry Solara and Corolla Matrix. It would have been interesting if the name of the Monte Carlo was Impala Monte Carlo and GM could have combined the sales records, but it doesn't really matter to me. It is just a way to boost sales numbers.

It has to do with the names and under the brand in which they are sold. If there was a Chevy Malibu and a Chevy Malibu G6, sure, they could be combined.

Essentially Toyota is spinning the numbers to keep Corolla in a top position. (I see just as many Matrixes on the road.)

This is the kind of thing they could get away with when they were churning out profits, but if they keep reporting losses, I imagine investors will demand more accountability.

No, they keep saying American companies don't build any smaller cars people want, and the sales prove it. Honda sells more Civics than Chrysler/Dodge sells cars.

the Matrix is just the Matrix. A better analogy is if Chevy combined Cobalt and HHR sales. Toyota is just fluffing its sales numbers to look better against the Civic.

An extreme example. Outside of the LX based cars and the newly-saved-from-death PT Cruiser, what cars does Chrysler have that's worth considering......Not even as an "enthusiast", but just as a regular car buyer?

Better example would be Chevrolet & Ford. Divisions that offer a line of cars actually somewhat competitive to imports, and sell very well as a group.

PERFECT POINT! PERFECT EXAMPLE!

No, it isn't. From the article...

The Toyota Matrix, sometimes officially referred to as the Toyota Corolla Matrix, is a compact hatchback manufactured by the Toyota Motor Corporation in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, to be sold in both the United States and Canada. It's considered to be the sporty hatchback/wagon counterpart of the North American Corolla and is counted as a variant of it in Toyota's sales figures.
