Is it time for SS to become.....
Re: Is it time for SS to become.....
Well, maybe GM should do that. Oddly, they've made the effort to distance the SS initials from the Super Sport name. In fact, I remember reading an "SS" press kit afew years ago which said just that.
Re: Is it time for SS to become.....
Why even use the SS name if you want to distance it from what it means?
That is rather odd. Especially in a time where they are obviosuly trying to make marketing and design plays off heritage. As for the recognitional advertising... I remember, how GM got information that the public was somehow not identifying the bowtie with Chevrolet as much anymore, so they made some specific bowtie commercials.... I dont knwo how effective they were, but it does show a premise for specific advertising for emblem recognition.
Re: Is it time for SS to become.....
But think about it, when was the last time you've seen any reference to "Super Sport" in any marketing, literature, or vehicles.
Re: Is it time for SS to become.....
I'm sure people still know what an "SS" is. If there's enough room and you want to spell out "Super Sport" without making it look like a tacky graphic, then go ahead. Six of one, half dozen of another.

Playing
's advocate, and throwing some gas on the fire in the tradition of the old SS vs Z28 arguements.....
.... does it really matter if people recognize what "SS" stands for? I'd be willing to bet that a very very small percentage of the general public has even the slightest clue what "Z28" means.

Re: Is it time for SS to become.....
Chevy has bastardized SS so bad anymore it's not even funny.
Re: Is it time for SS to become.....
The SS press booklet from afew years ago said something to the effect that the Camaro SS (4th gen), is the first SS that is not a Super Sport, but simply an SS. And I really haven't heard the Super Sport nomenclature used ever since.

Enthusiasts know what it is, why try to hide it? Unless.....Chevy really IS embarrassed that a FWD Malibu of any kind could be called a "Super Sport".....

Doesn't matter if anyone knows what "SS" means.
If you took a poll outside of the hard core enthusiast community, you'd probally get a blank look if you asked the meaning of "GT", "SVT", "SRT", "LS", or even the significance of "CTS-V", "GXP", "AMG", or a series of other letter combos.
You'd probally get 0% of the people who would get that Saturn's performance "Redline" series refers to the redline on the tachometer, or WRX refers to "World Rally" while the "X" is shorthand for All-Wheel-Drive. Someone may recocgnize "M-series". "Motor series" or "Motorsport Series" is going to get a lot of blank expressions.
SS to 99.9% of the population is simply a sporty version of whatever car it's on, just like all the other alphabet designations.
At least the vehicles GM is putting it on today truly deserves it, unlike just a few years ago.
