Is it time for SS to become.....
Re: Is it time for SS to become.....
Maybe it'd be a good opportunity for GM to up the ante on the SS versions of the Camaro. Some of the hubub about SS vs Z/28 relies around some opinion that SS is watered down. If they called the new Camaro the Super Sport, that might have added significance, over the more pedestrian 'SS' cars on the road.
Re: Is it time for SS to become.....
Doesn't matter if anyone knows what "SS" means.
If you took a poll outside of the hard core enthusiast community, you'd probally get a blank look if you asked the meaning of "GT", "SVT", "SRT", "LS", or even the significance of "CTS-V", "GXP", "AMG", or a series of other letter combos.
You'd probally get 0% of the people who would get that Saturn's performance "Redline" series refers to the redline on the tachometer, or WRX refers to "World Rally" while the "X" is shorthand for All-Wheel-Drive. Someone may recocgnize "M-series". "Motor series" or "Motorsport Series" is going to get a lot of blank expressions.
SS to 99.9% of the population is simply a sporty version of whatever car it's on, just like all the other alphabet designations.
At least the vehicles GM is putting it on today truly deserves it, unlike just a few years ago.

i was going to say the exact same thing about SRT, SVT, and even GT, etc.
I ESPECIALLY agree with the vehicles today deserve the ss name. SS has always been an affordable performance package. The ss cars of today, are a sportier, better handling, faster cars than the normal everyday models. I mean not all of the ss cars of yesteryear were 396 and 454 cars, i mean you could get a nova ss with a straight 6 IIRC.

I agree with that. Today's SS's outperform yesterday's in most ways. The question is, why has Chevrolet expunged all references to "Super Sport" in all it's ads, literature, marketing?
Re: Is it time for SS to become.....
i think it may be just because it doesnt matter anymore. Your average joe isnt going to care what the leters SS stand for. All they know and care about is that it is a designation for the performance cars that chevrolet makes. I mean I guess it wouldnt cost any extra or anything to put super sport on some stuff instead of just SS, but they probably figure, why bother... people in general are dumb, why confuse them when it isnt going to sell any more cars to put SS and super sport on stuff. The enthusiasts like on this site will always know what SS stands for, but for all anyone else cares it could stand for anything, as long as they stay performance oriented cars, it isnt going to matter to them.
