Yeah, sounds crazy, huh? I even made the supervisor get on the phone and talked to her about it. They even tried to look it up manually... same results.
So if you're a teenage boy living in California... you'll pay less insurance for a Mustang GT than for a V6 version if you have AAA. (Not sure if its still the case for the newer models.)
Re: Teens want mustangs
all I know is I'm at least staying away from my local AllState car insurance office here. They quoted me for a nice deal, and I even made sure they made sure and checked it was a Z28.. well guess what.. right after I signed up and cut my first check, they raised my rates, claiming they didn't realize it was a Z28.... forget that.
Bastards.. I'd imagine more there are other shady insurance salepeople out there for other companies, and for other cars.

Re: Teens want mustangs
I'm sure whatever you were paying for your sports car's insurance, it wasn't even close to my $650 a month when I got my SS... but it went down after 6 months to $250, so I guess it was all good?
Re: Teens want mustangs
I'm 22 and I drive a 97 V6 Firebird. I would have rather had a Trans Am, but in Massachusetts the insurance on even a V6 is prohibitive - I pay $200 a month, and I have no tickets (I was recently in an accident but I was not at fault as someone rear ended me). It's been like that for a few years, and there isn't anything I can do about it, as the state is murder on you if you are under 25 and carry any type of collision coverage at all, no matter what car or truck you have.
Since I pay my own loan and have my own policy, I guess I'm much more inclined to not "hot dog," since I'm deathly afraid of getting any tickets or being in an accident. Nothing annoys me more than a kid who was given their car from mommy and daddy and don't take any responsibility with it and then go smash it up.

4th Gens IMHO should not (except for V6 models) be sold to kids under 21.
Hopefully with the 5th Gen's they offer a mid-level V8 like the 305 was to the 3rd gens to make it an ideal mix of Power/MPG/Safety/Coolness for a younger kid...

I agree totally. In my 3rd gen I had the V8 sound without enough power to really get in trouble. If I started with the LT1 I have now I think I would be in jail.
Re: Teens want mustangs
Insurence is based on a number of things. Outside of age, driving experience & location of the car, next up is claims on a particular model. The reason I bring this up is that all this quoting of insurence doesn't really play into the issue here. Here's how.
Take a mid 90s Ford Thunderbird Supercoupe. It put out 230 horsepower and something like 330 ft/lbs of torque. It was easily quicker accelerating from a rolling start than a Mustang GT of the same year, and had a 5-10 MPH advantage on the top end. However, the car was expensive and was bought almost exclusively by 50 somethings new and by a crowd older than Mustang's used. The 'Bird has fewer claims because of the age group, and is therefore cheaper to insure than the same year Mustang.
A less dramatic difference occured when I compared insurence of my 97 Z28 and the same year Mustang GT. The Z had a huge performance advantage, but was slightly cheaper to insure than the GT, and much cheaper to insure than not just the V6 Mustang, but the Acura Integra & Mitsu Eclipse as well.
That having been said, despite the fact that the Mustang V6, Integra, or Eclipse has less power than a Z28 & is cheaper to insure, which car in the hands of a young inexperienced driver is likely to kill one of us as well as themselves?
My kid (who was responsible and well balenced when I was around) slammed my T-bird into a curve showing off. We parents can preach that "as long as our kids respect the power.." or "My kid handles my LT1/LS1 very well, so I trust him/her..." and therfore hands them the keys to a high powered missle with only a couple of years or less driving under their belt, and lets them loose on the streets that me and my family drive on isn't being very honest with themselves. They forgot how WE were when WE were that age..... and we weren't driving cars anywhere near as powerful as thes rides are today.

Re: Teens want mustangs
Ya'know, I got MOST of my speeding tickets, NOT in my Z cars or '67 Firebird that I drove to High School, but in a Grand Am
In my Bird I knew I had the Power, and had NOTHING to prove, though ocassionally raced anyways, but in the GA, I felt like an underdog and loved picking on higher powered vehicles.
The only time I wrecked my Bird was going 45mph in frosted roads..
(almost completely restored too..)
Just don't think that giving kids some mediocre powered vehicle is going to insure they don't speed or drive wrecklessly.
But I would'nt let my son drive my Z @ 16 either...

when it comes to having insurance on sports cars, it doesnt pay to live in No-fault states, or states that require insurance, as the Rates will be jacked all to hell.
On my first Z i changed my legal address to my aunts house a state over, where insurance wasnt required. Insanse savings, in some states agents go door to door trying to panhandle insurance, but in Insurance-Required states they stick it to us, and hard.
Re: Teens want mustangs
im 17 now, i got my license in july, and i still havent got a vehicle. my parents wont help me out at all, which i dont mind, so i have to buy an old s10 truck pretty soon, maybe if i get the money ill put a lt1 in it (ya right) but when i got my L, the first car i learned how to drive in was a 95 z28, i never had a problem with the power, sometimes i would like to see it go, but i wouldnt take advantage of it. i think its just because ive always wanted a camaro since i was 12, and i love them so much i would never want to destroy one, my brother-inlaw (he owned the car) smashed it three months later, i almost cried i loved it so much,. but if im working during my last year in school (get an apprenticeship) im going to buy myself a lt1 as a grad present haha. ive always wanted one, and i have to have one. just need to save up for gas money....
p.s. i should post more haha
