4th Gens IMHO should not (except for V6 models) be sold to kids under 21.
Hopefully with the 5th Gen's they offer a mid-level V8 like the 305 was to the 3rd gens to make it an ideal mix of Power/MPG/Safety/Coolness for a younger kid...

first car i "really" drove after i got my liscense was my dad's 88 firebird 2.8, next was my 86 Z28, then my 93 Z28(lost that one due to a wonderful 17 year old that went into me head on trying to cut a left), then the 96 Z28 i have now. i haven't really owned anything(except my ranger and my jeep) that didn't have a V8 in it. i really think it depends on the driver.

Somebody give this reporter a medal! He has somehow linked, obviously through years of meticulous research, that teenagers want "cool" cars while parents want "safe" cars for their children. We need to give this man a hand!
Gentlemen, we can all sleep better at night thanks to this amazing, innovating reporter.

For example: My friend with a '94 Camaro auto crashed it twice in like 3 months, and the last one did it in...Other friend with a '96 GT auto crashed it into a curb when he lost the rear end, and killed a rim, nothing major...Other friend with a '92 GT 5 speed fishtailed it and jumped a curb, (wasn't his fault, he hit black ice, no major damage to the car and he's a good driver so I don't really count this one. He's had the car a year and has had no other issues besides speeding tickets, lol)...Other friend: Just got an '03 or '04, (I forget), GT 5 speed....Lets just say the way he drives isn't confidence inspiring, and as much as I don't want to say it I think he's gonna' crash it...Just today he got a loudmouth 2 catback and x-pipe for it, and he can't even drive it. I hope he proves me wrong but I doubt it. I've had my '97 Z/28 m6 for about 3 months now. I've had no problems with it, I've also driven a '94 Z/28 m6 w/ bolt-ons, a '94 Formula m6, a '99 z/28 m6, a '96 GT auto, a '87 GT 5 speed w/ a good bit of work done, and a '91 Camaro RS auto 6 cylinder....No problems with any of them either...I think it depends completely on the person...I've been in 1 accident since I started driving, I got rear-ended in a '95 Mazda 626 5 speed, lmao

I've been on vacation for the past couple of weeks. I was trying to make use of free military travel to Hawaii out of Travis AFB, but I wasn't high enough on the list to get out within a few days (1st come 1st serve).
My son expected me to be gone, and took my restored '89 Black 5 speed manual Thunderbird SC to show off for his girl friend (on a learners permit, mind you!). Everytime he's with me, he was an exceptional driver, and I believed he'd ace his test when he took it this fall when he turned 17.
Make a long story short, he took an "S" curve in an abandoned housing area at nearby Fort Ord at a high rate speed, spun my 'Bird's rear end out, hit the curb, shattered the right rear rim (not bent, shattered!) & bent the knuckle. If he had taken my B4C instead, he'd probally have killed or seriously injured himself (or I would have done it for him, being that live axle would have been monstorously more to fix than a simple rear IRS spindle knuckle).
Bottom line is that regardless as to how well you train your kids, or how well you kids drive when you are with them, it's the ultimate act of irresponsibility and gullibility to get your kid a high powered car, and expect them to act wisely with it.

Re: Teens want mustangs
my 1st car was like 3 months after i turned 16 it was my
3.4l 95 camaro, had it for about a year, then a girl ran into me and totaled it
next my parents got me my 99 z28; which, i had for like 6 months got bored of and gave it to my dad
then i got my parents to get a loan for me*which i paid off* and got my 93 t/a, ive already spent 12k on it
then i recently got myself my loan for my 05 zx6rr, and i only turn 19 on aug 26th
and i plan on getting myself next year either a) 97 vette, b) another bike prolly a zx12r c)another t/a camaro
i am not getting rid of my t/a ever, and have not got into any wrecks in it...its just a matter of "KNOWING" how to handle power
BOTTOM LINE: it doesnt matter how old you are, it matters if you can handle the power...

Re: Teens want mustangs
bought and paid for my own car,so i didnt really have to hear much influence from my parents, but its a 94 Z28 6 speed, was stock when i got it but now its got some mods and i havent wrecked it yet(knock on wood),i think its a alright first car, granted a V6 wouldve been better to learn on,but which would you choose if you were in my situation, lol
Re: Teens want mustangs
Haha, you guys talk about slow cars to learn on and torque being the problem.. I learrned on a 1973 FORD THUNDERBIRD. 429 CI + C6 + 9" = Lots of smoke and mutliple tires... but no real acceleration from 45-75. I never got a ticket in that car. For the record, I'll be 20 in September, and I only have 1 ticket and no accidents to my name, the majority of my driving experience being with my '94.
Funny story with that T-bird.. I sold it to a friend for $500 and he let our friend drive it home the other night, I was with him.. A Van backed up ON THE FREEWAY into the slow lane, we swerved Big Birtha to the left and then back to the right to aviod some dumbass who STOPPED on the freeway to see what the Van was doing.. Lost the rear end at 65MPH and slammed the back of Birtha into the volvo and slid down into an embankment. Well, 6,500 pounds of Detroit Iron made that impact seem like a small bump.
And she fired right up, after we got her on level ground. I love that car.

Being a 19 year old Kid, with Ls1 and an Lt1 in the garage, i c how some of the older people here wont let there kids drive high horse powerd cars. I have had my car for two years and i got 1 ticket with it keeping up with traffic. I think if the kid respects the power the car has and doesnt have the show off attitude its fine. Im lucky enough to have a father that relize's this. and let me get my 97 after i showed him while i was 16 with his SS that i can handle the power and im not gonna go beat the **** out of it and what not. Its all parental judgement I guess when it comes to this subject or if ure kid has the $. The image thing is cool too I could look like a dork in a civic or cool in a camaro is kinda what i think. But I understand if I mess up the car could be gone. But in the end its up to most parents just my .02

Taken from www.iihs.org
This is non-refutable. If you take a teenager and put him into a Sports/Luxery car - you have automatically thrown him into the worst percentage group there is.
There were three kids that died in Auto Crashes in my graduating class. 1 was due to medical reasons (Anurism). The other two were both high speed wrecks 1 in a mustang, one in a Built-UP SS Monte Carlo. Coincidence?

Re: Teens want mustangs
All Im saying is if kids respect/take care of and understand the consquences of have a Sports car then it shouldnt be a bad thing. Would u rather have ure kid out partying or crusin the strip or whatever in there car? When my dad had his 79Z I knew thats what I wanted a z28.... and I got it, I respect it and take care of it and know what can happen, I have had the car little over 2 years now. and I dont think its all that bad to get kids into the hobby. I think thats why we have alot more tuners and ricers poppin up cuz most kids parents wouldnt trust them for **** with a muscle car/sports car.
