Why on earth would you think that for a car to be "american", it has to drink too much gas?

Last time I checked, the Z06 was making 400+ hp and was still getting 23mpg city, 30mpg highway, so does that make it un-american cause it gets the same gas mileage as my toyota?

So this basically proves the Soltice can hold a V8. Meaning GM can use this platform to build a 5th gen off of if they so choose. So now that the engineering work is done, how long should it take to slap on some new more Camaro looking body panels, 2 more seats and a bowtie. BTW is that an LS1 in that car, or do they use a different style V8 in gm Europe? How many parts does that share with the Vette generally?

I really dont care if they import every new "muscle car" here..from the GTO to a new friggin vette if it was made in antartica! Who cares..obviously they know how to make muscle cars..we forgot how to..thats the point..

but hey we got the Silverado SS...WHO THE F CARES! Its a nice truck but the wrong one came to market..
Im just in the mood right now to say this ...here is a prediction..Ford is going to sell a crap load of the new 05 stangs..so what if its retro..or whatever..its a hit..
gotta bring that pizzaz over here from other GM companies..if this Opel GT can be rebadged as a mustang fighter..then GET IT HERE in 2005..DO NOT WAIT..cus this Mustang thing thats drivingthis new RWD 2+2 craze..will get bigger when the boy racers want real power and GM has nothing to give them...

K, first things first.

The car is a concept.

Lutz and the boys went to Germany to take a look.

The chassis is now being called "tubular". It is intended to be the same chassis that Bengal, Sky and Solstice come off of.

The GERMANS are pressing for a small V8, Cowger is saying that a V8 is out of the question. I haven't figured out quite why yet... apart from the taxes that might be slapped on European cars based on displacement. In the overall GM scheme of things, I HIGHLY doubt that any European is going to be tasked with coming up with a new V8. The competence in GM (and worldwide) for V8's is in North America, we make the best, we always have, and that's that.

Opel NEEDS this car. Opel is the Oldsmobile of Europe, and is viewed as stodgy, boring and utilitarian. Opel needs some fire and this car and the Speedster could be it.

If "tubular" is truly universally applied across 5 car lines, the economies of scale that Camaro had to rely upon for the last 20 years (and rarely got) are there. A 250,000-400,000 unit program could be there.

The Solstice platform could easily be engineered to hold a V8, for reasons that I have gone over before. V6's are just as wide as V8's and I4's are just as long. If I can package both of those, a V8 can be packaged also - ESPCIALLY if the I4 and V6 in question are DOHC. OHV V8's are considerably narrower and shorter (in height) than DOHC V6's.

Bengal is a 2+2. Camaro is a 2+2. 2+2=4.

All GM has to do now to really light the fire underneath the platform and the enthusiasts is to let a more conclusive bit of information "leak". Just a little blurb in the right place and they can begin the groundswell that kicks off the process of reinventing the Camaro as America's affordable performance car once again. Back to the future...

One of you photoshop brainiacs needs to give the car round headlights like a 2nd gen, stretch the doors a bit, re-color it white, put a bowtie on the grill and slap on two orange racing stripes. Do that, and we're in business.

Question

Maybe they don't want to give Opel a RWD V8 car like that without letting the US have it first. That's fine by me.

PacerX,

1)What do we know about this "tubular" chassis?

2)How rigid is it?

3)How light is it?

4)What suspension components will it use?

5)In what dimension can it be built in?

Let's go......I gotta know!

photochop

Here's a photochop I did:

I dropped the headlights to be flush with the grille (1st gen queu but not retro) and got rid of that damn cross-bar. I kept the lights (4th gen queu evolved). I really like the lines of that car. I see 1st & 4th gens with a little bit of Viper.

hey what about giving it some Grand Prix style fog lights from the show car..the half yellow half clear..just make them verticle. with the yellow outside....then fill the middle space with some foglights like the 69 Camaros...is that ok?? and take out the chevy emblem and embose it into the front bumper aread..maybee add a little chrome strip like the split bumper ones on the 70's camaro.. to almost where the bowtie is embossed..

I think that for a Camaro, every body panel needs to be different. There are some good proportions that are there, but the styling does not say Camaro. It would be hard to just Photoshop that car to be made to look like a Camaro and make it look good.

One question for me is: If that will be the home of the Soltice, just how big would a Camaro be that is based off that platform?

Danno,

Darned fine work. If you figure out a way to stretch the door area just a tad to give a 2+2 look and recolor it to creme white with orange stripes I think we're really on to something.

I'll provide any details I can find out about "tubular" when I find enough out to write about.

"Ok Pacerx you said it has a "small V8". My only question is will an 5.7 LS1 block fit?"

My early guess is yes, especially if the new corporate DOHC V6 is the engine for the Buick.
