TA Owners: would you have bought the new "GTO" instead??
Pontiac is no doubt hoping that the new Monar... -- oops, GTO -- will fill the void and then some left by the demise of the TA.
So, if both the TA and the GTO were being sold simultaneously (and at the same price), would you have bought the GTO instead of your TA?
Personally, I still would have bought the TA. The GTO's looks are a huge turn-off to me. It looks like a Grand Prix, no, I mean Catera, no, I mean Saturn L-Series.....ZZZzzz

I love my T/A, but I'd be stupid to pick it over the GTO. It's so much more refined, and still packs plenty of punch. All in all, its a better car.

It's like asking would you pick a Monte Carlo over a Corvette! Apples vs oranges.
A better question would be would you pick a GTO over a Grand Prix GTP, since they both are about the same price & likely aim at the same market.

Not unless it was a convertible. A 4-seat convertible with reasonable room might help me look past the uninspired styling.

I'd buy the GTO over the 4th gen T/A if both were selling new side by side. But then again I'd buy a 3rd Gen over a GTO, assuming the 3rd gen was brand new and built by today's standards, so who knows.

I was attracted to the GP from a size/space point of view, but I hate FWD, and wanted a V-8 too. T/A was too overdone for me, so I got a Formula. If the GTO had be available, it would have been a seriously close decision. Maybe settled by a coin flip.

There's one other factor in this scenario and that is, GM would have to make a freshning of the Trans Am body style. I'm sure that if the f-body did survive into 2004, it would have been schedule for some kind of update.
Bottom line though, given a choice, I think I'd rather have a brand new T/A than the GTO

I'd buy the new GTO over a T/A
Why?
I'm kind of the opposite of the OG post
I like the looks. I don't like how loud the T/A is, I prefer my cars to be a bit more understated. The GTO also seems to have superior build quality, better suspension, and more power.
GTO would get less looks from cops because it's a "fast car"...in general, I don't want my car to be treated like a fast car.
Hell, I have the Cougar if I want a loud muscle car...I want a nice sports car I can take to work without getting pulled over daily.
Besides which, I really like how the GTO looks.

No, because I'm a Camaro guy at heart. The only reason I even considered a Trans Am is because I know its the same car w/a different personality.

If I had a HUGE sledehammer so I could beat down that protrusion into the passenger side floorpan from the cat converter, I'd go ahead & buy the firebird.
But, if I had an extra 8,000 to spend, [on top of vehicle purchase price] I'd buy the GTO and take it to a custom performance shop and make it LOOK like a GTO.
I guess the firebird is the less of two evils....
{Unless Pontiac makes the bonneville G/xp concept car into a production car w/300 H.P. to battle the maurauder...Then I'd buy that in a flash! How about bringing back the 2 + 2 nameplate!}
