Toronto, Ontario - The Chevrolet Impala SS will return to the Chevy lineup as a 2004 model with a supercharged 3.8 litre V6 engine, and the two-door Monte Carlo SS will be upgraded to the same supercharged engine for 2004, said GM on Wednesday.


The 2004 Chevy Impala SS will deliver more power and tighter handling with a 240-horsepower 3800 supercharged V-6 engine, beefed-up four-wheel independent suspension and high-performance speed-rated tires with 17-inch diamond-cut cast aluminum wheels. The monochromatic black SS also will feature bright stainless steel dual exhaust tips, fog lamps, a six-gauge cluster including boost gauge, and “SS” badging.

“The 2004 Impala SS will be a thoroughly contemporary interpretation of the style and performance that built the SS heritage beginning with the ’61 Impala Super Sport,” said Mark Alger, Marketing Manager, mid-size cars at GM Canada. “True to this legacy, the 2004 Impala SS will be a great value compared to other cars with similar performance, and well within the reach of mainstream customers.”

The 2004 Monte Carlo Supercharged SS offers the same 240-horsepower 3800 supercharged V-6, four-wheel independent performance suspension and high-performance Goodyear tires with 17-inch diamond-cut cast aluminum wheels. The Supercharged SS also will feature a race-inspired spoiler, bright stainless steel dual exhaust tips, fog lamps, a six-gauge cluster including boost gauge and “Supercharged SS” exterior and interior badging.

Chevrolet is working with the GM Performance Division to develop the Impala SS and other SS vehicles that feature strong acceleration, enhanced handling and uncompromised driveability. The first result of this collaboration is the Oshawa-built 2003 Silverado SS extended cab short bed pickup, available in the first quarter of 2003.

The only down-side, IMO, with the Monte Carlo Supercharged SS is that it looks like you are going to be locked into that "Sport Appearance Package"...

 

Yup, good stuff. The single thing that makes a Monte look really good is some nice looking, large wheels.............like 18's. There is a guy running around here with 18's on his black Monte and it looks really good.

 

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Monte Carlo suppose to die after the '05 or '07 model year?

 

No its supposed to revert back to RWD.

Supercharger? Great! The fact that they're still FWD V6's...

 

Those supercharged 3.8's take to mod really well. With a 3.4" pulley and a CAI your running high 13's @ 100mph. Not 4thgen/C5 competition but reasonably fast.

 

Same here. One guy is running his black monte ss with some really nice wheels. The whole car looks worlds better, IMO. It would be such an awesome mobile if it were only RWD - it truly looks good with nice wide tires. He also had a dual exhaust (just tips) and nascar style rear spoiler. That's it, no other cladding. Very slick.

 

I took my LT1 Z28 to the track a year ago. You could imagine the look on my face when a bunch of GTP guys were running low to mid 13's, and the best I ate was 14.4 due to slipping clutch and bad wires. I thought to myself "out of all the days I had to pick this one"

 

Ya, some of the GTP guys really have their stuff together for the type of car it is.

I'd imagine 99% of this stuff can spill over to the Supercharged MC SS and Impala SS.

"W" cars (soon to be mid-lux) will continue after GM's RWD cars debut, and are made in a different plant which currently isn't scheduled to close or scheduled to change models before 2008 at the earliest.

Translation: Don't be so quick to assume that Monte Carlo will revert to RWD, or even continue when the Chevrolet version of GM's Large Car based RWD "Performance Chassis" debuts in 3 years.

 

Huh? I though GM recently had a press release announcing RWD for the Montes and Impalas in 2006?

 

The press release was that the Impala was going to get a V8 for the 2006 model year. There was another press release regarding a couple of new plants which will supply powertrains for Caddys, trucks, and GM's new 2007 RWD large and performance cars.

Besides the 1 year difference between the V8 Impala and the RWD chassis (it might be nothing, but I wouldn't dismiss it), nothing regarding Monte Carlo has never been mentioned.

 

do we kno what kind of performance cars (besides the vette)? would i be correct in saying the the best bet to see a return of the f-bodies would be 2007+?

 

The "performance chassis" mentioned in the release isn't the Corvette (it was mentioned separately).

The only announced car on this chassis is the 2007 GTO. But, it definately won't be the only car built off it (GM has to make a few different cars off it to make it worthwhile).
