you may now start your regularly scheduled toyota bashing.
Toyota Motor Co. will recall 55,000 floor mats due to complaints of unintended acceleration caused by the mats sticking underneath the accelerator pedal, federal safety officials and the automaker said Wednesday.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration took the unusual step of highlighting Toyota’s recall announcement, advising owners of other Toyota models – including the Prius hybrid and Avalon sedans – to ensure their floor mats are properly installed.
“We have also received complaints about the RAV 4 (crossover) and Tacoma (pickup),” said Rae Tyson, a spokesman for NHTSA. “We will continue to monitor all of the other Toyota vehicles not involved in the recall."
As the Free Press first reported last month, NHTSA had opened an investigation into the floor mats after amassing 40 reports of unintended acceleration in 2007 Lexus ES 350 sedans, including eight crashes and 12 injuries. Since then, NHTSA has received complaints from owners of other Toyota models about the problem.
In several of the original complaints, drivers said the vehicles only stopped after an accident.

that's mostly because the morons put the floormats on top of the regular ones.. the only reason they are recalling them is to put better instructions on the packaging so a 2 year old couldnt screw it up
not trying to defend toyota.. but this one aint their fault

If you will notice carefully, Toyota is recalling FLOORMATS, not cars.
Yes, in an industry first, we have a car company recalling it's floormats.
Kinda like a president declaring war on an adjective, isn't it?
Ford recalled the COBRAS to put clips on the floormats.
Toyota recalls the FLOORMATS to put clips on the floormats.
"The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration took the unusual step of highlighting Toyota’s recall announcement, advising owners of other Toyota models – including the Prius hybrid and Avalon sedans – to ensure their floor mats are properly installed."
How nice of the NHTSA to "highlight" Toyota's announcement.
"“We have also received complaints about the RAV 4 (crossover) and Tacoma (pickup),” said Rae Tyson, a spokesman for NHTSA. “We will continue to monitor all of the other Toyota vehicles not involved in the recall.""
Monitor the other complaints?!?! With what resources? They did not have the resources to investigate earlier this year, so they close the case. Could there be any crow to serve at this 5-star restaurant?!?!

"Toyota said Wednesday the recall involves 30,500 mats for the ES 350 and 24,500 mats for the 2007 and 2008 Toyota Camry."
So in this statement, we see that we have named the Rav4, Tacoma, Prius, Avalon, Camry, and Lexus ES in the complaints filed, and the recall only involves 55,000 floormats in the ES and Camry. UmmHmm. OK. Gotcha.
I have every confidence that recalling 55,000 sets of floormats will answer the call for hundreds of runaway cars and accidents between 2003 and 2007. And I feel most certain that these 100mph jaunts down the highway for 6 miles or more were caused by a floormat under the gas pedal. After all, it would take minutes to reach down and pull a floormat out towards your seat after you realized that your gas pedal was NOT COMING BACK UP when you take your foot off of it, huh?
Likewise, I feel 100% sure that a floormat was wedged under the gas pedal of the lady who shifted from reverse into drive and shot under a mobile home, decapitating her. Makes sense to me... she had her foot on the brake from stopping while backing-up, the engine was revving wildly at WOT, and she decided to go ahead and put it in drive anyways.
Ditto the guy whose Lexus ran amuck in crowded parking lot when he shifted into drive to pull out of his parking space and took out 6 cars. I'm sure the floormat had the gas pedal nailed to the floor and he just decided to put it in drive and see what happened.
I'm no Ralph Nader - don't want to be. But I am an engineer who works on cars - ALOT - and I can apply logic to a situation. When they don't add-up, they don't add-up. I am convinced this issue will kill someone else soon, and saddens me to see that needless loss to force a company to admit something is not right - I don't care WHAT company it is.

Witch King: I must be asleep when I read our local Detroit newspapers because I haven't seen any of this Toyota recall stuff in print.
Now on the other hand, if one of the Big 3 so much has a problem with a cup holder, now that's put in 18 point bold font headline on the front page.

Didn't make it into the print.
Didn't make it to the headline news (at least not as of this post anyways).
I was able to do a search on Yahoo and it came up about 9th down the list, behind the good headlines posted below...
1.Honda, Toyota lead in average fuel efficiency
Chicago Tribune - 1 hour, 10 minutes agoHonda and Toyota offered U.S. consumers the highest average fuel efficiency of 2007 model year vehicles, the government reported Wednesday.
2.Honda, Toyota lead in U.S. fuel efficiency

9.Toyota, Nissan recall mats, fuel tubes
CNN Money - Sep 26 2:42 PMToyota Motor Corp. says it will recall floor mats in 55,000 of its 2007 Lexus ES 350 and 2007 Camry models that, if not secured in place, could slip and get trapped under or over the accelerator. This could cause a car to accelerate even after the driver lifted his or her foot off the gas pedal.
10.Toyota, Nissan issue safety recalls over mats, tubes; Minnesota, Wisconsin included
Pioneer Press - 42 minutes agoWASHINGTON - Toyota Motor Corp. said it was recalling optional "all-weather" floor mats in 55,000 Lexus ES 350 and Toyota Camry passenger cars because the mat could interfere with the gas pedal and lead to a crash.
So despite all the best efforts of staff writers all over the world, the article just didn't seem to warrant a "marquis light". Go figure.
If I hear about it on the NBC nightly News tonight, I'll be the first to jump back in this very thread and acknowledge it!
