Yep, I'm well aware of what they're doing with engines nowadays. What's even more amazing is that they build an auto that'll live behind those monsters.

My comments make more sense if you go back into Mercedes' relatively recent history - even a short five years ago, their engines weren't anything to brag about.

I'd say that's right.

Before the current monster lineup of 55s and 600s, the only impressive V8 was the previous E55 N/A motor making 349hp yet propelling a 4000lb auto sedan to a 13.2@109.

Just read the latest C&D today. They ran the SL600 to 11.5@120. Geez.

Speaking of auto trannys, they had to detune the upcoming 65 series motors by about 100lb-ft to let the tranny live, so they're only making 650lb-ft at 2000 instead of 750.

On the Crossfire, I was confused as to why they would stick the 215hp 3.2 MB V6 instead of the 250hp 3.5L Chrysler V6 in the base model, but the SRT-6 answers that question.

The Crossfire is a really nice handling car. The issue with it has been that it didnt have enough hp for the price-compared to for example the nissan z. A flagship model shouldnt have only 215hp and cost 35k. The car also has a round shape trunk, looks like it wouldnt fit a regular size golf bag in it. So far I would say sales have been slow, but 330hp in a fiero size car will create some interest.

Actually, I think their making 750 instead of 850. In a Car & Driver article they tell about the downtuning of the motor and say that they still put out 750 (as I recollect)...

IIRC that engine can put out ~1200 Nm, but is limited to merely 1000 That is probably very close to what you said though.
