Spinoff thread: Why is Chevy killing Cobalt SS?
Charlie noted in the 5th Gen forum that the Cobalt SS Supercharged package will not be offered in 2008. My question is, why? It seems like a decently popular package that gives GM a little credibility with the "tuner" crowd. If anything, they should be placing the turbo 2.0 in the next Cobalt SS, unless they feel that the turbo HHR will fill this sport compact role?
Personally I think that is a big mistake, I don't believe HHR is nearly as popular with the younger crowd. Any ideas?

2.4L "SS" cars will now be called Sport instead of Super Sport.
Turbo replaces S/C soon enough. Maybe the 2009's MCE will be out early 2008 and they are saving the Turbo DI 2.0L for the new car.

The SS with the LNF 2.0 Turbo is supposed to be a MY2009 . Which basically could mean it could come out any time after December 2007 . My crystal ball with the Cobalt SS has been the HHR SS and info from a couple credible people . Im told there are a couple running Cobalt SS's with the LNF turbo engine at Lordstown . Outside that , getting Cobalt SS info is as easy as winning the lottery
From my understanding , the Cobalt MCE as far as styling changes has been cancelled , which is understandable given the next gen for the Cobalt and the Astra is due 09/10 timeframe .
I have 55K trouble free miles on mine and I love as much as day 1 , GM would be clinically brain dead to cancel this car .
Another thing I though of too for the lapse , I dont think they have enuff M62 superchargers to continue making the car until the Turbo car is released . GM did pull Eaton M62 blower out of the GMMP catalogs and discontued the LSJ crate engine to meet 2007 build out requirements . So it may come out at same time as the HHR SS , which isnt debuting with the normal 08 lineup either .

Yea nothing seems to be set in stone, but this isn't the first time i have heard that there won't be a forced induction Cobalt in 08.
The rumors of switching to turbo have been around since the car was released, but nothing substantial. And since the only turbo ecotec was for a RWD platform, things were looking doubtful for a turbo.
However the lack of any new supercharged ecotec information and the current confirmation of the HHR SS getting a FWD turbo ecotec, its looking like the Cobalt SS/SC will now be called the Cobalt SS/TC.
Kind of sucks though. I mean everything has turbos nowadays. One of the reasons i got the ss/sc is because it was different!!!

Dont know how accurate it is. Not sure if they will Turbocharge it or not. 260hp from the factory would be nice. I wouldnt care what they called it.
It really does. It also looks awesome on the Silverado's and HHR. I think for the silverado it was only used on the 99-02 style. I saw an 07+ avalanche and it looked awesome too. It's a shame to nix it, it's such a cool color and really pops when the sun hits it.
