Overall, the car has a profoundly geriatric feeling about it, like it was built with a swollen prostate

Thumbs down Re: Sopt on Review of Ford's new Montego

As a people/luggage carrying SEDAN the Five-Hundred (in base FWD form) is probably a better choice than something cramped and totally despicable like a Pontiac Grand Prix.
Despicable, in what way? In its award-winning quality, or its innovative features like HUD, XM and OnStar? The Montego has advantage in a few interior measurements such as front headroom (and it SHOULD judging from its over-inflated greenhouse) but is worse than the Grand Prix in others such as shoulder and hip room. And let's not even talk about which car holds more cargo, especially when you fold down three seats in the Prix (What? the Montego can't do that? ). The Montego is a questionable competitor for the Prix.

That would be the same Dan Neil that won a Pulitzer Prize for criticism, heralded by many of the auto writers for giving their craft a little more prestige?

Uhh, believe it or not Buick still makes decent money for GM. Kill it? I'm glad you aren't running the show in the RenCen.

You might be right. Strictly as an appliance. The Grand Prix would be the sedan of choice for drivers with a pulse. That gimmicky "SUV-style" seating in the Ford/Merc midsize twins will do absolutely nothing for sportiness. As "horrible" as the W-body is you should keep in mind that the platform still carries a lot of profit for GM.

4. ...Don't think about the Grand Prix at all.

5. ...GM deserves nothing but scorn for continuing the same mediocre, not-to-well packaged W (Mid-Lux) and G-body products.
I'll agree with you that GM's last product people are the blame for GM's current predicament by lazily sitting on their bread & butter cars in a amazingly short sighted quest for profits and funding of additional trucks.

But I gotta disagree with you on the Grand Prix. Grand Prix in GTP form is a pretty awsome car for a big front driver. It has a fantastic looking body (though the nose could have been done better), it was the 1st car that reflected GM's awareness that it needed better quality interiors, and the 3800 supercharged V6 is not only extremely receptive to modest modifications, the engine's tough enough to take it (though the tranny is a different story).

For me, I want a car that's more than an applience. If I were reccommending a big sedan for a friend's daughter, my 1st reflex would be to say Honda Accord or Toyota Camary.

But if someone who previously owned a Z28 or a Mustang GT & liked to tinker with cars asked me advice for a brand new big FWD sedan, I'd say Grand Prix GTP so fast his (or her) head would spin.

Grand Prix isn't a car I'd buy, only because it's not RWD and it comes only in a sedan. But I can't think of another front drive sedan I'd even consider other than the old 300M.
