I think what they are trying to get at, is that its not just the price of the car going up with our 3% inflation, it is also the cost of getting all the materials and making it as well. At least I believe so..

Let's assume in 1993 when the 4th gen was introduced, that it cost $20000 fully loaded. Its base price that year was $17,000. Each year do the recursion and add in the 4% increase.

1993- $20,000
1994- $20,800
1995- $21,632
1996- $22,497
1997- $23,397
1998- $24,333
1999- $25,306
2000- $26,319
2001- $27,371
2002- $28,466

So getting a fulyl equipped 2002 Z28 through inflation should nearly cost $29,000! That's almost on target with the prices they were at the end of the run. If you add in a $3,000 SS option on the 1997-2002 cars, the cost of a fulyl equipped coupe SS would cost $31,500! That's almost the cost it was at the end of the run! The SS's that cost $35,000 were the convertibles. That is PRETTY MUCH correct. I think many of you guys need to consider inflation in your rants about prices. a $35,000 GTO is perfectly priced. In relative dollars, its only priced slightly more expensive than the 1993 Z28. A $40,000 Corvette coupe is too cheap too.
If you start the GTO price where a loaded WS6 left off in 2002 at about $33,000 you get:

2003- $34,320
2004- $35,692

So it's almost like a GTO cost the same as a loaded WS6 if pontiac still made it.

I think the gripe of most people is that the GTO will be just about loaded, which at that price it is not that bad of a deal, but There are a lot of people that would like to drop about $5,000 worth of options off of the car. I'm sure this problem will be addressed by 2006 when the american made GTO comes out.

hmm.. using the 4% average annual inflation rate, I figure it's a good thing I'll be dead in 100 years

1993- $20,000
2003- $29,605
2013- $43,822
2023- $64,868
2033- $96,020
2043- $142,134
2053- $210,393
2063- $311,432
2073- $460,996
2083- $682,387
2093- $1,010,099
2103- $1,495,193

when the middle class has ceased to exist and a Camaro costs a million and a half dollars. jeez.

I bet it will be a real nice Camaro though. Do you think by then the us mint will finally get rid of the penny?

OK guys, I have to admit that I like it too. It really does look better IMO with this hood and trim peices. I could take or leave the stripes - either way.

That said, I now would like to ask your opinions on something I noticed about the car in that one pic.
I actually like that. It looks kinda interesting, a mix of old school, and new stuff. I htink that would be nice if they did that...
And also...
"Design looks good, but I would pass on the color scheme and decals. "
"That looks really good. It gives the front end some other features to look at. They should have just done this to begin with and some of the negative criticisims wouldn't have been there."

The above quotes are all in reference to the following pic...
http://www.micro-op.com.au/execls1/gtoscoop.jpg
and there were a few more too.

But after all the hype that was spewed about the GTO looking too much like a GP on roids, I HAVE GOT TO POST THE FOLLOWING OBSERVATION...
I looked at that pic today at work and I was back away from my screen (a 21" BTW) a little when it loaded.
I swear, I thought it was an SN95 Mustang!
I just glimpsed at the body profile and the windows before concentrating on the details, and I thought I had loaded the wrong image, I swear it.

You guys think I'm kidding - it doesn't look like a '96 model Mustang?
Well check this out... Comparison Image
Look closely at the following details...
rear view mirror shape/size
rear view mirror mount bezel shape/size
round foglamps, sunken, and directly below headlamps
hood trimmed to conform to headlamp shape
door handle shapes
door handle positions
front fender shape and profile w/ hood/headlamp area
ovular lower radiator opening between foglamps
arched and contoured rear spoilers
rear spoiler size, position, and overhang
headlamps slanted in towards center bottom
grill openings slanted up and out
lower rocker panel mouldings are both raised
rocker panels share similar profiles (look under pass. door)
shape of the rear 1/4 glass (with rounded rears)
shape of the side door glass/openings
both are on 5-spoke alloys and
oh yeah, they both have 2 holes in the hoods!

Now I'm not saying they are the same car, my design taste and eyesight is better than that! But who can deny that these cars aren't VERY similar in overall bodywork and design?!?! Honestly now?

I tried to find a pic of an Orange Cobra or GT to use in this comparison, but couldn't find one suitable - the Mystic Cobra will have to do. But just imagine if they were both the same color to boot!

So whadda y'all think about them apples!
(I'm a little giggly over this to be honest!)

proud ... proud ... proud... what are we going to do with you?...

I can see what you're saying but if i squint or take 50 steps back from the screen i can make alot of cars look similar to others...

and here is a pic of them side by side... note the extra fog lights on the aussie stang...

Nice Pic!!!
I had to look, cut, paste, and post my own to demonstrate my observation - it took a while too!

The Monaro looks even MORE like the Mustang with it's original grill opening - far more so than the GTO split-grill IMO. I f you go back 1 bodystyle to the SN95 Mustang, you'll have the rounded headlamps and tucked-under fog lamps that look more like the Monaro in that picture too. The 197-bodied Mustang has a little more "edgy" lines and helps make them a little more discernable I think.

So was that pic from some article, or did somebody down under beat me to this comparison thing?

And lastly, you DID see that I confessed to liking the styling of the Monaro, right? I guess now I know why it appeals to me as it does!

BTW, Ude - THANKS for at least posting a reply.
I guess you were the only one with guts enough to comment on my proposal!
I notice nobody DIS-agreed with my points!

I was on a road trip all day today on business, and didn't have a chance to look at the thread until just now. I honestly thought that post would shake up some people and create some good responses. I guess that's what I get for thinking!

It got about 100 views, but only 1 reply... is that some kind of record?
So now I'm wondering why people DIDN'T reply...
maybe because I was right - GM and SLP is rebodying an originally beautiful car to closely resemble a 9-year-old Mustang design...
or maybe they didn't respond because they were simply speechless (which I SERIOUSLY doubt on this board! )...
or maybe everyone is simply trying to fugure out how we made it this far without noticing the similarity...
or maybe we are all trying to figure out if the GP/GT looks like the SN95 Mustang too so the "loop" can be complete!

HeHeHe... I'm just goofin' with you all a little here - noone take any flames please. I've had a great day, just got back from my Mom's 64th Birthday party, and had a ball playing with my little girl tonight. I'm in a great mood and just trying to share a smile with you all. You guys be thankful for your health and family... I know I sure am.
