Sliding doors on cars

What are people's opinions on sliding doors on cars like the Opel Insignia had?

Also when does everyone think we will see them on production sedans/coupes?

it would be so nice in tight parking situations which right now we basically have to avoid

Whoa, they've actually done a concept of that...I've been thinking about cars with sliding doors. What if it's only a 2-door coupe, but has both doors slide back? It would be a lot easier to get out of the car Is there some safety regulation against that?

Sliding doors would be Ok I guess, but would there be an unsightly track on the side of the car like you get with minivans?

Not as noticeable if the track is right below a rear window. That and the depending on how much the door weighs, it might not need a huge track like minivans.

I would love it if cars started getting sliding doors (as long as there wasn’t an ugly track), that would mean fewer doors dings on my car.

Yes. Yes.Yes.

Ive had this idea in my head for more than a year now, but I was sure you all would think I was mad. I think it would make tight parking spaces navigable. I think it would make people and cargo easier to move in and out.

I think its one of many possible solutions for a coupe that would normally have doors that are too long. I havent paid close attention to any minivans lately, but the tracks seem to be better integrates, as long as the doors are fairly light I see no reason why not.

I even like the profile of that car with the rear door slid back, I think a talented designer could probably achieve the same effect in the front if they wanted. If you could make a "pillarless" suicide door effect on a full size sedan... I would be all over it.

I just remembered seeing a production car w/ sliding doors, the Peugeot 1007.

Seems as though the slider tract isn't very well integrated.
