3.5 Vue is AWD only (15/22); 3.6 Vue is available either way; 3.6 AWD is rated 16/22. Probably gets slightly better city fuel economy due to the 4,300+ lb weight. Good example of the potential for a more powerful engine to improve mileage; the smaller, less powerful engine has to work harder to get a heavy vehicle like this moving from a standing start (in-city driving).

In all honesty, the Commodore is smaller but has the same space as the larger Impala. G8 also has a 261hp V6 vs a 211hp V6 in the Impala. Compare the 3.9 to the G8 V6, see the mpg difference.
G8 also has a larger DOHC V6 as well as 5spd auto trans.

just guessing.. but the G8's DOHC v6 is probably a bigger (externally not displacement) engine, and thus probably heavier.. that and the extra drivetrain components required for RWD over FWD could add to drivetrain parasitic loss due to friction.. not to mention adding weight
so.. the G8 is smaller outside, bigger inside (in most measurements)...
but it is heavier and since it's RWD sufferes more drivetrain loss of efficiency.. so it has lower MPG
