Since it cost SO much money to close Oldsmobile...

Help me out-
Why is it so easy now to close Pontiac and possibly Saturn/Saab/Hummer (if they didnt have buyers).

Does filing bankrupt have any influence and make it easier for them to do this at a minimal cost?

While I am digging up an old nameplate, I always felt Olds had more life in it then Buick! Even now.

Bankruptcy is the reason why shuttering all these nameplates is an option now. The Oldsmobile closing required GM to pay off a lot dealer contracts. A bankruptcy wipes away those contracts.

Also, it might be considered that getting into a legal pissing contest with the government would strike most as futile. Uncle Sam has an unbelievably large "bladder" and also owns all the "restrooms".

The legal issue would, IMO, have to be taken up with the "Old GM". I don't think you will find a lot of lawyers willing to get into a fight with a defendant that will have no money to collect, at least not on a contingency basis.

Bankruptcy & GM is "not renewing" some dealer contracts as opposed to buying out contracts.

Bingo.

This really is the right move for GM. Just like killing Olds was. GM needs not to compete with itself.

Not to mention, most Olds dealers were independent (i.e. not holding another GM franchise)

One of the major reasons GM consolidated Buick/Pontiac & GMC under one roof was in case it had to (or planned to) phase out another division. The dealers stick around because they have 2 more divisions to sell.
