I think Cobalt is ok, but not wonderful.

I was seriously irked when Chevrolet named the "Malibu" model... er, uh Malibu. "Malibu" was originally a trim line on the Chevelle in the 60's. My first car was a 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu. (May have also been on the Novas and Full-sized Chevys, but my memory isn't what it used to be.)
I mean really Chevrolet... why use a trim option name as a model name for a new vehicle? Could you imagine a prototype called "rallysport", or "LS", or even "SS"? Um... er.... oops!

Funny you should bring that up.

Chevrolet has a history of trim names replacing model names.
The first "Silverado" trim optioned trucks were C-10's.

So the Tahoe was a Blazer, and the Blazer was a Trail Blazer that could be ordered with the Tahoe trim option.
Gotta love Chevy for consistancy.

Actually the Blazer started life as the "S-10 Trail Blazer", then "S-10 Blazer", and finally just "Blazer" after the full-sized "Blazer" was renamed "Tahoe". Which in itself is ironic since there used to be an S-10 Blazer trim package called "Tahoe."

The Chevrolet Monza (named after athe famed race track) was brought out in 1974 as a smaller sporty car based on the Vega, but had a V8 as an option. Chevrolet began neutering the car in 1979 when it dropped the V8 in favor of a V6 as top power, and was completely replaced by the Chevy Cavalier a couple of years later.
While it's competitor, the Mustang II, was known for comfort and quality (for the '70s), Monza was the car that actually could handle and it's performance compared to the Mustang II was outstanding. Chevrolet raced the car in IMSA and many other avenues, as it was initially seen as the successor to the Camaro, and was treated that way.
The market the Colbalt coupe will enter is identical to the market the old Monza appealed to in the '70s. A younger than f-body crowd, that was into great handling small cars that were in with the times.
Colbalt though a decent name and would probally play well with Chevy Truck's "Like a Rock" campaign, just doesn't ring as a name for a sporty coupe. Besides, Monza SS to me has a better ring than Colbalt SS.
What do you think?

IMO, Cobalt is a much better choice. Sounds modern... and it's new and fresh, which is what Chevrolet needs for this new car...

although I like the name Cobalt, personally it sounds like a car that belongs with Saturn, not Chevy.
I like the name Monza, it has that small car road racing feeling when I think of it.

Honestly? I would love to see the Beretta name make a comeback. I liked Berettas "back in the day," especially Quad 4 H.O. GTZs...
Now, maybe the Beretta nameplate has a bum rap because of all the junky ones driving around, and they did drop the name only 7 years ago. But I still like it...
Regardless, Chevy SHOULD have some sort of car in the Malibu line that replaces the mission the original Beretta had with the Corsica...a nice, compact coupe. Why must one jump from Cavalier to Monte Carlo just to get a 2 door??? Big jump...one that is simply not filled in the GM family...
Unless you look at my other car
Chevy should make a sporty, 2 door Malibu for this generation, but we all know they won't
