Should the 5th Gen V8 run on 87 octane?
Should the 5th Gen V8 run on 87 octane?
Should the 5th Gen entry V8 run on 87 octane as the Mustang GT's motor does? By voting yes, you are saying that it should accept 87 as the recommended fuel. By voting no, you are saying that premium should be recommended and all performance data will be based on running premium fuel, but the motor can run on regular in a pinch.
Just thought this would be a fun poll.

I'd like to see only minor differences between a mid-level and a top V8. Compression and cam timing at most - both of which would lean toward the useability of regular unleaded.

Only if theres a base level V8. If GM does what they did with the 4th gens, and has a take-it-or-leave-it performance package, it should use premium.
Heres to hoping GM has base level V8s...

I voted no based on the first post, or this interpretation:
93 Octane is recommended for optimun performance BUT the car will run just fine on 87. For my daily driving I run 87, I could feel no performance difference.
Plus, Car and Driver had a very interesting article and test about 3-1/2 years ago. Pretty much convinced me 87 - 89 was fine for the jog to work and back.

I voted YES. Let it run on 87 without issues.
Regarding the C&D story, I tried the 87 octane in my wife's '99 Maxima we had leased a few years ago. Afterward, maybe a year or so, recurring check engine light and a fouled coil. The check engine light kept showing an oxygen sensor code. I think the lower octane use catches up with you later on some cars that otherwise don't show a "loss" in performance.
My two current cars are supercharged, Xterra & Millenia, and premium is recommended. I haven't tried the C&D trick on these based on my experience with the Maxima.

I highly do not recommend anyone pour 87 in a car that recommends being driven on premium.
Re: Should the 5th Gen V8 run on 87 octane?
I've come to understand (right or wrong) that a lot of the octane/performance/maintenance has to do with how the engine is tuned and it's compression ratio.
Most import cars I've heard (at least the premium brands from Europe) run on the lean side to be as clean buring as possible and thus need the high octane stuff. A Carolla probably doesn't, but I'd bet a 350Z will.
The LS2 I've read will run on 87 OK without issues (well, so far) even tho 92+ is recommended for max performance. The LS7 needs high octane because of it's higher compression ratio. I'd suspect forced induction engines require it or at should run on it because of it's forced induction.
Just what I've concluded talking with a lot of folks over the past few years. It also will depend what brand of 87 you use. I've run BP and Shell 87 in my LT1 and LS1 for over a year with no problems. I'll run 92+ when I autocross because I want the added 3 -4 hp (according to C&D) and I'm running at WOT.
