"Up to 12,000 miles".

So say 12,000 miles / 20mpg (no particular vehicle in mind, just pulling that out of my *** as a normal average) = 600 gallons * 3 dollars a gallon = 1800 dollars.

So in other words they're saying "up to an 1800 dollar rebate on this 20mpg car assuming you drive it 12,000 miles".

Corny promo IMO but I bet it will work well considering how much buzz there is over gas prices.

Yeah, there is a local dealership here (Hyundai/Toyota/xxx) that was advertising that "everything on our lot gets 50 mpg". Obviously, since the only Toyota to do that is the Prius, and no Hyundai comes close, they were doing the same thing. They were offering to "make up the difference" based on an estimated number of miles driven per year.

So if the car being sold gets 30 mpg, they will pay you enough money (for three years) to get that up to 50 mpg, based on the 12,000 mile/year (too few nowadays). The best is that I think (not sure) they were using the highway rating, not the combined rating.

Pretty shady IMO. Many people don't drive only 12k per year, and no one drives ONLY on the freeway...

LAME.

The absolute worst, though, was when a local dealership started advertising "Employee Discount for all customers"... on USED cars.

I agree....I think it has potential as a marketing campaign. If it does appear successful, watch the other manufacturers follow suit.

Dealers suck

No really, as a group, we do. We have zero conscience, pull the wool over the eyes of anyone we can, are always out there to make the fastest buck possible. And what is even cooler is that as dealers consolidate ownership more and more, guess what??? Its gonna get harder to get a better deal because no matter where you go, the same people own the franchise!!!! Monopoly, anyone? I already have witnessed used car prices rising substantially in my area.

I loathe the day I have to buy a car from someone besides myself...

Dealers do suck. Its very hard to get into a traditional dealership and get a straight price on a new vehicle...lots of games tend to be played. I loathe the day that I buy a car from anyone other than myself or my associates at Carmax. Honestly, Carmax is the only dealer I've been to in this area where I've gotten a value for my trade-in, in writing, and where I got a set price on the vehicle. Everywhere else I've been kept tossin me between salesman and each one had a different number on the same vehicle. Carmax sell new cars too by the way
