Re: Saturn to replace Oldsmobile???????

I think its a good idea. I made an example over at GMI that Saturn was made to combat the rising imports like Honda and Toyota.
Honda and Toyota are now at a level past small 4cyl cars, and I belive Saturn is just doing the same as the other 2.
If the media's reaction is any sign about these cars, I cant wait to see them.

Re: Saturn to replace Oldsmobile???????

There was nothing wrong with Olds a good marketing campaign would not have solved. I still cringe thinking about the goofy looking guy in the cowboy hat driving the Alero in the TV ad when it first came out. Yeah, THAT was a good idea...I can see that in a Silverado ad, but an Alero?

I hope Saturn does not go the way of Olds. The move upscale and away from plastic body panels however makes me really question...what's the point? I can see upscale models, but the whole division?????

Re: Saturn to replace Oldsmobile???????

The whole thing really makes no sense to me. I think it reeks of GM being unwilling to just admit that Saturn was a mistake and write it off. They should have killed Saturn, not Olds. Saturn was a miserable failure as an "import fighter" so now they want to reposition it upmarket of Chevy and Pontiac? And the "Different Kind of Car Company" who sold a "different kind of car" are now just another GM division selling a rebadged Cobalt, Equinox, and Malibu (OK, so Chevy are actually selling a rebadged Ion and Vue, but you get my drift). I really have to question why we need Cobalt AND Ion, Vue AND Equinox, Malbu AND Saturn whatever. I say trash Saturn and let Chevy be what they used to be - the value division. It's what they should have done in the first place. Killing Saturn won't bring Olds back, but it might help a General Motors who, in my opinion, have too much market saturation as it is.

I have an idea.....

I think Saturn should take the slot formerly held by Olds.
After that...they should rename Saturn, Oldsmobile.

OLDSMOBILE Redline

It's got a ring to it.......

not only have Saturns been non-competitive since their introduction, all of them, every single last one of them, has been bland, boring, or straight up ugly(Vue, Ion). If they had a stylish product to sell, I gaurntee they wouldn't be in the prediciment they are now.

If they had stylish product, what would separate them from Pontiac??

I hope the new products are as good as hyped by the article. I can see Saturn acheiving a quirky, Saab-like level with the move upscale. But then again, GM already has Saab itself.

I think Pontiac should be a "youth" brand.

When I say "youth"...I not referring to merely "entry level". Not in the way that Chevy plans on flooding the world with cheap Daewoo built/designed, Chevy labelled products.

I'm talking about a American Scion. Affordable, unique, youth oriented products...with a strong factory based aftermarket.

I like what GM is doing with Pontiac, IMO.

Also, that article hyped the Saturn line a lot. Now I'm wondering what's really going on in GM. Sounds too good to be true

Re: Saturn to replace Oldsmobile???????

that is the most retarded thing i've seen GM do yet.

GM execs: "we don't have enough problems. I got it! lets pump 3.8 BILLION dollars into a devision which has NEVER made any money, whose only real selling point (to some people) is no-haggle pricing, reposition it upscale to automatically alienate any shred of a loyal following that it's got and see what happened! BRILLIANT!"

GM, please put down this rabid dog you call Saturn and save yourself and us the trouble of having to deal with it.

An american scion? i understand what your getting at entirely, but i would not call that a good analogy. When our group saw that for the first time at the auto show, we had the hardest time keeping a straight face. the quote of the day was "This is how Toyota is trying to reach out to America's youth!? [pause] " I am America's youth, and i have yet to come into contact with anyone who could take that thing seriously. ...that might be the reason ive seen a grand total of 2 of them outside the autoshow.

I really...really...really miss Olds. A lot. I was lucky to have sold Aleros during the height of their popularity in the 2000-2001 model years. Great, great cars. I wish I had bought one. If they had made an Intrigue Coupe, I KNOW I'd own one of those. 3.5 DOHC engine, clean style, quality interiors...such a shame...
