...so what makes GM any different in this regard? Do they have some sort of control over their dealerships that Ford does not?

well, yes but GM is better then Ford so thats how....
what I mean is that GM can control things by not allowing certain dealers to get what is a limited run car, and only give it to a few dealerships, to where the mass-produced Mustang will be a lot harder to just sell from just a handfull of dealerships then the 18k unit GTO.
Ford could try, but I would belive its a lot harder then it would be to do the same for the GTO. Pick a few dealerships per state and give them the GTO's. Much like there are certain SVT dealers(I belive), have only a certain dealers that can deal with teh GTO as well as future limited run cars like the Solstice and GXP models. I think this will solve the problem with giving each dealership its X amount of cars, it only gives the certain dealers the privilage to sell and work on Pontiacs performance cars. This will also give Pontiac that image of having these dealerships to offer certain things for performance of the vehicle. Just an idea that I wish GM would adapt to help solve problems like this.

LISTEN
that is an old car. about 1-2 years ago when we were wondering what the gto was gonna look like (but already saw the holden version) there was a pic on the net. it was of a holden just like that one with the exact same hood, except the hood had some pin-stripping. somebody please pull this pic out

Most of the pics showcase the new front end of the car, which I'll admit does look pretty good. However, once people start seeing these cars on the road, they will realize it's the same old boring-shaped car, except now it has a cool looking front fascia. I seen a GTO on the road the other day, and thought it had a side profile very similar to the Dodge Stratus, until I realized the Stratus looks better.
