Question About "Ordering" Cars

If I decided today that I want to buy a brand new car, lets say for example, I wanted a new Silverado. If I went to a local dealer, and found a vehicle I liked, it meets all of my needs, wants, everything, I can buy it then and there, and pay whatever price I can negotiate, right?
If I wanted a set of options that no dealer around has on thier lots, then I can order a truck build specifically for me, right?
Would I be able to negotiate a lower price than MSRP, or am I stuck paying MSRP, because I am specially ordering a car? Has anyone ever done this, how does the whole process work?

You most certainly can negotiate it just like any new car sitting on the lot.

There is one advantage and one disadvantage I can think of to ordering (assuming you are willing to wait for it to come in the first place...)

Advantage: The playing field is level between dealerships. All of them will be ordering the EXACT same truck, so the price comparisions are 100% apples to apples...

Disadvantage: Sometimes you can get a better deal from a dealership who has had a specific vehicle languishing on their lot for a long period of time... if they just want to move it out.

Take it from the resident sleazeball salesperson...what Darth said is accurate. The only problem is when the dealer network in your area likes to universally be a bunch of jackasses, and either insist on doing a locate, or raping you on an ordered unit. TYPICALLY, you can go to a small dealer (like me) and order anything you want for around $300 over invoice. The only cars we sell for more than that on an ordered basis are GTOs (typically $800 over) or a Solstice (we're nice enough to not add to the MSRP like every other a**hole around here )...

Another disadvantage:

You are stuck with the incentive program that is on when the vehicle arrives.

Another option, if you can get a dealer to agree to it, is to have them order the vehicle you want, and give you first dibs on it when it arrives. If what you want isn't really weird, they may go for it. That's the deal we have on the Vibe in the sig.

This is one of the biggest points. Remember, the deal of the day may not yet be there in the 6-8 weeks when your vehicle is built and shipped. Keep this in the back of your mind.

Also, if you have a certain combo that isn't on your local dealer's lot, yet want to take advantage of the current incentive program, see if they will do a dealer trade to get one off another lot. We do this for many (most?) of our customers to make sure that they get the vehicle that suits their wants, as well as their needs.
