Question Question about 2006 engine changes.

Will the Grand Prix get the 3.5L & 3.9L like the Impala or keep the 3800's?

Will the CTSv definatly drop the LS6 for an LS2 or L92?

Will the CTSv get a 6 speed automatic option?

Does the 3.9L have DoD. It originally was going to, but now I don't see anything about it anywere. At least it still has VVT.

Will that be the last of the gen. 3 engines then?

I'd imagine it depends on which motors are changed in the trucks for 2006. Still a couple gen 3's if memory serves me right.

No auto for the CTSv
GP keeps the 3800
No DoD for the 3.9, at least for the G6.

I thought the primary difference was that the Gen IV's have different heads. BTW, I also thought the LS2 was a Gen IV.

Gotta say...i'm dissapointed with the CTS-V going the Ls2 route. Why switch from a 400hp ls6 to a 400hp Ls2? Tq figures would be nearly identical as well. Total output would be unchanged from ls6 to ls2. For some reason, i expected it to get the new 500hp Ls7. I hope they atleast rework the Ls2 for the CTS-V and get output in the 425-450hp range.

LS2 is a Gen IV and has more torque than the LS6 at every RPM even though they are rated the same

6.2L L92 would be nice for the CTSv. I don't see it ever getting the LS7

Plus it's one less engine that GM needs to build and stock for new cars by taking the LS6 out... I'm sure that figures into the equation.

I know, but the average joe doesn't care about the tq curve, etc.... People for the most part just look at peak figures. Ls6 just seems faster when you compare c5 z06 to c6, and current Ls6 CTS-V to new Ls2 GTO (GTO is about 100lbs lighter and has superior aero, but was 2 tenths and 2.3mph slower in head to head test).

The question now becomes...yeah, it'll have more tq across the revv-range, but will the car be any faster with the Ls2 than it was with the Ls6?

Maybe it's me, but i'd like to see a noticable improvement when a new engine is shoved under the hood. Something to the tune of 40hp and 3+tenths in the quarter would be nice. The Ls2 definitly has the potential to make more than the current 400hp, and so i just hope the V's get a slightly warmed over version than the one in the c6 and GTO. But that probably won't happen. Bummer since the cheaper SRT-8 is packing 425hp granted it isn't any faster.

The C6 is slower than the C5 Z06 for reasons like the torque management or whatever its called. It probably has a less agressive tune from the factory too. Its also probably cost effective for GM to eliminate all LS6+LS1 production and switch to just the new generation.

Personally, I'd like to see the CTSv keep the LS6 so it would be a little more unique. It seems as if the LS2 is being put in everything, degrading the specialty of each individual vehicle in a way. Almost too much of a good thing.....hmmm

Re: Question about 2006 engine changes.

I thought that the CTS-V was for 05 the only car with the LS6 and was therefore stuck with a gas guzzler tax because the engine was only certified for that one car, however GM in using the LS2 would be able to knock that off.. not sure how correct I am on the LS2 part though.

Re: Question about 2006 engine changes.

I belive the CTS-V will go LS2, and then eventualy go to the L92, 6.2 making low to mid 400's. I guess by then the new "Ultra" next-gen DOHC V8's will replace the Northstar, and boost the performance closer to 500hp.

I thought the CTS-V was going to get the LS7.

I think that the LS7 is a bit high strung for a heavy sports coupe. That, and I doubt Wixom could build enough of them.
